How many classes of antibiotics are there? Not enough in order to address the urgency of the looming #AntimicrobialResistanceCrisis. Due to climate change as well as the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in humans and animals, the World Health Organization calls the AMR Crisis "one of the top global public health and development threats...[putting] many of the gains of modern medicine at risk" and urges the development of new classes of antibiotics. MIT Jameel Clinic - AI & Health Life Sciences faculty lead Jim Collins recently spoke with Anne Trafton for MIT News about his newly published research in Nature Portfolio demonstrating that not only could deep learning discover new structural classes of antibiotics with high antibiotic activity, it could also predict whether those compounds had low toxicity for humans.
