In 2024 alone, the U.S. has deployed enough renewable projects to be equivalent to 30 Hoover Dams, a fantastic comparis from Jeff Marootian from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) EERE during the Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s Global Energy and Industry Event.
Brett Simon, Director of Commercial Strategy at e-Zinc, attended the Thursday event as a part of Climate Week in NYC. The gathering, centered on the urgent need to decarbonize the U.S. by 2030, a goal set at last year’s COP, featured discussions on ambitious topics like 3x renewables, zero-emission transportation, securing sustainable financing, and achieving net-zero emissions by mid-century.
Notable takeaways from the event included:
📈 Clean energy is rising: Electricity from zero-carbon sources, like solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear, already accounted for 41% of global electricity generation in 2023.
💥 Progress is accelerating: The U.S. is making significant strides in renewable energy, with 2024 setting a high bar for deployment of projects. Jeff Marootian drew an impactful comparis of this achievement to being equivalent to 30 Hoover Dams.
✋ Permitting and interconnection remain major obstacles: Despite incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act, permitting challenges have driven up the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) for U.S. offshore wind by a staggering 60% between 2021 and 2024. Additionally, over 1 terawatt of renewable projects are currently stuck in interconnection queues.
e-Zinc is committed to decarbonizing the energy sector through our innovative zinc-air battery solutions. Our team is energised by the discussions and insights at these kind of events, that help to align our commercialization strategy with the dynamic demands of the energy transition.
