🌟 We are excited to introduce our keynote speaker, Ludovic Jourdin, for the upcoming 1st Electrochemical Conversion National Symposium (ECCNS). 🔬 Explore the groundbreaking world of Microbial Electrosynthesis (MES) with Ludovic Jourdin! In his presentation, Ludovic explains how a biofilm-based microbial porous cathode in a directed flow-through electrochemical system continuously reduces CO2 to even-chain C2-C6 carboxylic acids. This novel reactor design mitigates mass transport limitations, achieving remarkable improvements in biofilm concentration, volumetric current density, and productivity compared to the state of the art. 👩🔬 Ludovic Jourdin is an associate professor at Delft University of Technology, renowned for his pioneering research in environmental biotechnology. With a background in chemical engineering and a Ph.D. in environmental biotechnology from the University of Queensland, he has been at the forefront of investigating novel technologies for electricity-driven bioconversions. Following a successful postdoctoral position at Wageningen University, he embarked on his independent career journey, focusing on microbial electrochemical conversions relevant to today's global challenges. 2-butanone was identified in Aachen as a superior Otto fuel years ago. The direct microbial synthesis from glucose is cumbersome, as the final enzyme catalyzing the dehydration, is B12 dependent and needs often an auxiliary protein for regeneration. Here, this limitation is overcome by our colleagues using electrochemistry. #sustainability #bioeconomy #microbiology RWTH Aachen University DTU - Technical University of Denmark
🥳🔬 We are kicking off the week with some exciting results for you: New FSC publication from the collaboration of iAMB, AVT.CVT at RWTH Aachen University, and DTU - Technical University of Denmark in Green Chemistry! In this work at the interface of biocatalysis and electrocatalysis, the biotechnological production of acetoin was investigated using quiescent Lactococcus lactis cells. 👩🔬Carolin Grütering and co-authors demonstrated that acetoin can be produced in dilute buffer solutions, allowing direct electrochemical conversion to 2-butanone. 📚Interested? Then read the entire paper and stay up to date with our research.

[Did you know ?] 💡 3 times a year, our Scientific Committee meets to discuss about scientific innovations that will change the future. 🔬The Committee is chaired by Bernard Meunier, former President and member of the Académie des sciences. It is composed of 6 other external members : Cossy Janine, Patrick Couvreur, Gilles Auffret, Géraldine Masson, Christophe GOURDON and Jacques Leclaire ; and internal members Pierre Luzeau, Christophe EYCHENNE-BARON (PhD), Jean-Louis Martin, Dominique AUDOUX, Gérard Guillamot and Julien Boutet. 👨🔬 Recently, SEQENS launched its new offer SeqensUP! which intends to help our customers facing their bioavailability challenges in early development phase of an API, and was initiated by our Scientifc Committee. The Last meeting of 2023 focused on : ✔️ New trends like Liquid Ionic, and new solvents to improve solubility, permeability and in fine bioavailability, ✔️ A new derivative from our catalogue portfolio to be used as bioavailability enhancer, The committee also discussed photochemistry from Proof Of Concept (POC) to large scale production. Karine Loubière, CNRS research director from Laboratoire de Génie Chimique Toulouse / Chemical Engineering Research Center of Toulouse and Wouter Stam from Flowid were invited to discuss with our Scientific Committee and Seqens experts. Thanks to them for the fruitful discussions! #Ourscienceforyourfuture #innovation #chemistry

«A new one-pot synthesis approach is described to obtain the RhNP-TPPO@CCM-C catalyst with narrow-sized RhNPs without the use of auxiliary stabilizers. The resulting catalyst was thoroughly characterized and applied in the aqueous biphasic hydrogenation of styrene, where it demonstrated superior performance with respect to both activity, catalyst/product phase separation as well as recyclability relative to previous RhNPs@CCM catalyst systems. The versatility of the catalyst system was also shown for the hydrogenation of other alkenes, alkynes and carbonyl substrates.» Find more about the one pot synthesis of RhNPs in functionalized core-crosslinked micelles in our recent publication in ChemCatChem. To store electrical energy with biology, you must couple it to electrochemical systems such as an electrolyzer. Several co-authors (Bastian Molitor, Isabella Casini, Falk Harnisch, Uwe Schröder) and I published a review paper on many possible combinations of electrochemical and biological systems: https://lnkd.in/e-GGqfh2

CorrFRSE FRSC Chair of Organic Chemistry & CiMIC Professor of Chemical Biology at the University of Münster. Associate Editor Chemical Science
Congratulations to Dr. You-Jie You, Dr. Joel Häfliger, Dr. Zi-Xuan Wang and Dr. Constantin G. Daniliuc on publication of their I(I)/I(III)-catalyzed diene carbofunctionalization to access medium rings in Angewandte Chemie! This work was motivated by the emergent success of unsaturated medium rings in medicinal chemistry, and their historic importance in ligand design and fragrance development. To explore this region of chemical space, we developed a modular platform to generate 8-membered carbocycles from simple phenethyl-substituted 1,3-dienes. Exposing these simple starting materials to an I(I)/I(III) catalysis cycle, densely functionalized, fluorinated benzocyclooctenes can be generated with the introduction of an allylic substituent. By changing the oxidation / activation strategy, and the external nucleophile, the cyclization can be coupled with concomitant C-O, C-N, and C-C bond formation and we demonstrate this with >30 examples. Thanks to the University of Münster, the European Research Council (ERC) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for generous support of this research! The work is dedicated to one of my former teachers, Dr. R Alan Aitken from the University of St Andrews on the occasion of his 65th birthday. #openaccess #projektDEAL Check out our article here: https://lnkd.in/e6gWQcW8
