In 2022 we reached an all-time-high of more than 36 Gt of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere. That is the equivalent of 368,000 fully loaded U.S aircraft carriers, or more than 70 times the mass of all humans on Earth. If we are to have any chance at addressing the climate crisis we need to close the circle and develop a circular carbon economy, but there are many challenges associated with this. Through a series of studies, using rigorous assessment tools, a collaborative team that includes RASEI Fellows Bri-Mathias Hodge and Wilson Smith, the barriers and opportunities for using electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction to close the circle and capture carbon emissions to use them as future feedstock have been outlined. The most recent results from these analyses came out last week, you can find out more, along with previous publications here: https://lnkd.in/ggYbrM59

Senior Consultant at CLERENS, Executive Director at the Battery European Partnership Association (BEPA) within the Batt4EU Partnership.
Still buzzing from the amazing Battery Innovation Days 2023 and the BEPA - Batteries European Partnership Association General Assembly in Bordeaux, but let's also take time to see what has happened elsewhere in France recently.🔋 🍷 🥐 🔋 🚝 Intercalation Station published interesting take-aways from the 74th Annual meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry, held in Lyon in September: 👑 Gen 3 LIBs remain king and there is a lot of cutting-edge work being done on this battery type. This fits with what we have seen for our recent Batt4EU call on Gen 3, where we had 19 applications for 2 funded projects! 🔜 Still a lot of work done on All-Solid State Batteries, showing faith in the promise of this technology 🆕 Just like at the Battery Innovation Days, sodium-ion is in vogue. Redox-flow batteries got a similar amount of limelight, showing a clear need for scalable, cheap and CRM-light storage solutions. ⌨ We will take all this on board while we are drafting our new strategic research and innovation agenda for Europe. Any thoughts to share on the above and what Europe should invest in? Contact us, join BEPA and become active in our working groups! Oh, and go and subscribe to Intercalation Station (link below).

💡The seamless integration of data centres into energy grids plays a pivotal role in fostering sustainable digitalization. RISE Research Institutes of Sweden ICE Data Centre has played a significant role as a pioneering pilot within the WEDISTRICT project, wherein a cutting-edge micro data centre has been seamlessly linked to district heating system. The energy needs of this innovative unit are met through the utilization of bio gas, showcasing the potential of fuel cell technology as a viable long-term energy storage solution for data centres. 🔥Utilization of waste heat harnessed from data centres and fuel cells holds tremendous promise in augmenting the value proposition for next generation of district heating systems. Follow ICE Data Centre's LinkedIn page to keep updated about this and future projects: https://lnkd.in/dgiFKsqr #sustainable #digitalization #datacentre
Finally, we proudly present our second demosite video from Luleå, Sweden. RISE Research Institutes of Sweden researchers Jon Summers and Jonas Gustafsson explain the how they used biogas powered fuel cells to run a small data centre and use its waste heat via liquid cooling to heat a adjacent facility. Thank you, Jon and Jonas 😀!

Green energy and green hydrogen is happening but requires a coordinated approach from multiple stakeholders.
The CEO of IXL Center, Hitendra Patel spoken yesterday to an audience made up of the Governor of the State of Ceará, the President of the Sistema FIEC, Ricardo Cavalcante, authorities, universities and a good part of the Ceará’s business community. During the event he presented the “Opportunities for Ceará in the Green Hydrogen Value Chain”. The presentation was held too by Professors Donald Lessard from MIT and Gunther Glenk from the University of Harvard. Both presented positive views about Ceará’s Green Hydrogen HUB.

#Industry | European industry faces major challenges today: it must transform in the next decade to align with the European Green Deal objectives; it needs to define and better integrate the strategic autonomy objective; it must agree and pursue policies for its long-term competitiveness. 🔸 How to promote clean manufacturing in global markets? This is what we are discussing today at a conference in #Brussels organized by leading think tanks from three countries: IDDRI (France), Agora Industry (Germany) and Forum Energii (Poland). Forum president Joanna Pandera PhD points out that the starting point for industrial transformation is different in each European country. 🔸 Learn more about our event! ▶ https://lnkd.in/ggEYp9Fu

Our strong commitment to decarbonise our industry means that we can't stop innovating. An exciting field that our dedicated R&D team is currently exploring revolves around mineral carbonation for cementitious materials. This methodology has recently shown promise in permanently storing CO2 in our products and reducing their carbon footprint on our journey towards achieving net-zero emissions. Research experts have now acknowledged that mineral carbonation has reached a level of maturity that enables scalable, cost-effective implementation as a ready-to-use solution. During 1st RILEM Association International Conference on Mineral Carbonation for Cement and Concrete in Aachen, we had the opportunity to present our latest findings. The conference, which we helped organise and was hosted by the Institute of Building Materials Research at RWTH Aachen University (ibac), focused on the latest advancements in mineral carbonation and its potential applications within various industries. The valuable insights gained from this event will directly influence our future activities as we strive to reduce our carbon footprint and build a more sustainable future.
