🌟We're thrilled to introduce our next keynote speaker, David Vermaas, a leading expert in CO2 electrolysis! 🔬 As CO2 electrolysis matures, the urgency for scalable stacks increases. David will discuss the state-of-the-art technology, addressing key challenges like water management, salt deposition, and electrode lifetime. He will highlight the path towards developing MW-scale electrolyzer stacks, exploring GDE- and MEA-based configurations and the potential of fully aqueous cells to operate at high partial current density. 👨🔬 David Vermaas earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Twente. He co-founded AquaBattery and was appointed Assistant Professor at Delft University of Technology in 2016. He has an impressive track record, including an ERC Starting Grant and coordination of the MELODY project. His work focuses on Electrochemical Flow Systems, with collaborations across universities and companies globally. 🌟 We are excited to introduce our keynote speaker, Ludovic Jourdin, for the upcoming 1st Electrochemical Conversion National Symposium (ECCNS). 🔬 Explore the groundbreaking world of Microbial Electrosynthesis (MES) with Ludovic Jourdin! In his presentation, Ludovic explains how a biofilm-based microbial porous cathode in a directed flow-through electrochemical system continuously reduces CO2 to even-chain C2-C6 carboxylic acids. This novel reactor design mitigates mass transport limitations, achieving remarkable improvements in biofilm concentration, volumetric current density, and productivity compared to the state of the art. 👩🔬 Ludovic Jourdin is an associate professor at Delft University of Technology, renowned for his pioneering research in environmental biotechnology. With a background in chemical engineering and a Ph.D. in environmental biotechnology from the University of Queensland, he has been at the forefront of investigating novel technologies for electricity-driven bioconversions. Following a successful postdoctoral position at Wageningen University, he embarked on his independent career journey, focusing on microbial electrochemical conversions relevant to today's global challenges. With a background in Energy Engineering and a Ph.D. in Energy and Nuclear Sciences and Technologies, his research focuses on understanding and improving energy processes and systems. His multi-disciplinary methodology integrates technical perspectives from chemical and mechanical engineering with system-level analysis, driving innovation in energy transition research. 🏆 Congratulations to Isabell Bagemihl, the winner of Delft University of Technology Best Energy Paper award 2023! Her remarkable work earned her the Best Paper Award of TU Delft e-Refinery Institute and got nominated for the last round of competition. 🔬𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞: 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐥𝐚𝐛-𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐯𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 Isabell, PhD student at Ruud van Ommen's group, developed a multi-scale model – from reaction channel to full-scale process – for assessing reactor design for electrochemical CO2 reduction from a techno-economic perspective. Specifically considering the performance interdependencies, it yields performance targets that are actually achievable in current electrolyser designs. She demonstrated her model for a single reaction (CO2 to ethylene) but it can be readily adapted to many more.
