David Shankey, Deputy Director-General Energy, Department of Energy and Public Works, Queensland Government, will be joining the Australia Wind Energy 2024 Strategic Summit as a Keynote Speaker from 10-11 July 2024. David Shankey was appointed Deputy Director-General of the Energy Division in the Department of Energy and Public Works in August 2021. David led the division as it delivered Queensland’s 15-year Energy and Jobs Plan, the most significant and challenging energy reform agenda in the State’s history. The plan provides the strategy for Queensland to move from coal fired to #renewable generation within ten years while reducing carbon emissions from the energy sector by 90%. It also sets out the initiatives needed to manage the social impacts of the changes associated with the transition. The UK government has unveiled the Great British Energy Bill, establishing a new public-owned company dedicated to clean energy projects. This initiative will receive £8.3 billion ($10.7 billion) in funding over the next five years, sourced from a windfall tax on oil and gas companies. Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary for the British Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband stated, “Great British Energy comes from a simple idea – that the British people should own and benefit from our natural resources.” In partnership with local authorities and the Crown Estate, this initiative aims to bring 20-30GW of new offshore wind projects to the seabed lease stage by 2030, potentially leveraging up to £60 billion in private investment. This effort is a significant step towards achieving the UK’s clean energy goals and reducing energy bills. The new budget, announced by Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, marks a GBP 500 million increase over the previous government's funding. This decision aligns with the Labour government's target of 60 GW by 2030, including 55 GW for fixed-bottom and 5 GW for floating offshore wind. “Offshore wind is critical to hitting the government’s 2030 target, and this funding boost is a significant step towards achieving it,” said Emma Pinchbeck, Chief Executive of Energy UK. The AR6 auction, set for August, aims to reverse last year's outcome, where no offshore wind projects were secured.
