In the heart of Gloucestershire, England, a unique football club is taking strides towards a sustainable future, creating waves far beyond the realm of football. The Forest Green Rovers, dubbed the "greenest football club in the world," are a prime example of how sports and sustainability can team up! ⚽🌍 The club, under the stewardship of Ecotricity founder Dale Vince, is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to become carbon neutral. From solar panels and rainwater collection systems to vegan diets for players and fans alike, every aspect of the club is attuned to sustainability. 💚🥗 The pitch itself is organic and maintained by a solar-powered robot lawnmower named "Mow-bot". Even the spectators' stand is made from wood - a first for a modern stadium, with an emphasis on using sustainably sourced and low-carbon materials. 🏟️☀️ But it doesn't stop there! The Rovers are currently developing the Eco Park - a sports facility designed with an utmost focus on energy efficiency and sustainability. This includes a stadium built entirely out of wood and a nature reserve around it. The Forest Green Rovers are showing the world that it's possible to love football and our planet at the same time. The ‘Better Shape Up Award’ promotes upcycling in Victoria. The Good Op Shop has created this fun award to support anyone in the community who is interested in upcycling and who wants to have a go at making something out of ‘waste’. The award is divided into three categories, with a prize of $300 each: Emerald - most waste reduction, which is measured by how much it reduces landfill Gold - most original, which is measured by the novelty or radical nature of a new idea for upcycling Ruby - most artistic, which is measured by the keen eye of our judges Entries are now open! Entries close on Saturday 30 September at 4pm. How to enter: Please bring your completed upcycled creation, to The Good Op Shop, 4 Lewis Drive Castlemaine by 4pm on Saturday 30 September. Please include your name, email and one line about why you think upcycling is important. The entries will be displayed in The Good Op Shop wherever possible. Selection A panel of three will select the winner of each category. These three finalists will be displayed in The Good Op Shop. The community will then be invited to vote for the ‘community’s choice’ award, which will receive $100. All entrants are welcome to collect their entries after the competition. 🎉 A big day for Useful Projects as Sport England launches their ‘Every Move’ Sustainability Strategy! 🎉 Over the past 18 months we’ve been supporting the development of this in several ways: 💭 Leading the sector-wide consultation. 👣 Calculating Sport England’s carbon footprint and developing their operational action plan. 🤝 Developing the ‘Every Move’ strategy in a highly collaborative way with Sport England. 📷 Working with our sister company, Thomas.Matthews , to develop the 2050 vision infographic. Is This The World's Greenest Sports Club? Forest Green Rovers, a small football club based in Gloucestershire began its journey to becoming the world’s first carbon neutral club in 2010. It is now described by FIFA as “the world's greenest football club”. A great achievement when you consider the recent US billionaire buyouts and sovereign wealth funds entering the top tier of English Football. It’s the small league two club who are the upstanding example of sustainability. They are showing the sporting world how to run a football club with integrity, green-fingered responsibility, and with wider society in mind. Some of their key implementations include; 👉Sustainable football kits made from recycled plastic and coffee waste. 👉All-Vegan food on matchdays replacing meat pies with ‘Quorn & Leek’ pies.  👉World’s first timber stadium that allows local wildlife to flourish. 👉Fully powered by renewables using electric team buses. 👉Carbon offsetting home and away day ticketing. Locally, the team spreads the word about sustainability through its Ambassador Scheme, which provides a valuable link between the club and local schools. And attention from the media has brought an increasing number of visitors to the area benefiting local business. Fans are now replicating their team’s green vision by becoming vegan, buying electric cars, and living more sustainably. It is clear that Sports entities will need to implement an environmental, social and governance strategy (ESG) in 2024 in order to stay ahead. Because sports clubs remain a huge driver of local sustainability efforts with their large platforms and wider influence. Their ability to promote a green economy is crucial for wide-scale adoption. In fact studies have shown that entities with a strong ESG strategy have better business performance with higher financial returns and less risk. And because of Forest Green other clubs are now taking note. Which is a positive for Sports and local communities.
