We’re breaking down what an acquisition only tariff is, and why we’ve asked Ofgem to keep them banned. Acqusition tariffs are usually cheaper or better deals for only new, not existing, customers. Since April 2022, they have been banned. We want this to continue. That's why we shared an open letter to Ofgem asking them to reconsider proposals to lift the ban. Fair, affordable, and sustainable energy deals are a crucial part of the UK reaching net zero goals. We believe energy should be fair and affordable for everyone, and loyalty shouldn’t be penalised. Read our open letter through the link in comments.

Financial viability of distribution companies is the key for the sustainability of the power transmission and distribution system. And for that cost-reflective tariffs imposition is imperative. Lately, Discos are making this common request to ensure the interest of customers and the financial sustainability of the DISCOs. This is mentioned as a key aim of the IESCO Distribution petition on the NEPRA website, stating that it will improve service quality and reliability in servicing its current and future customer base while ensuring enough funds are available for investment in the network. Meanwhile, FESCO is requesting a bi-annual WACC (interest rates) adjustment for RORB (return on rate base) calculation for the tariff control period. https://lnkd.in/dqVJ5Hte

Price cap falls, but cost of living challenges continue This morning Ofgem has announced the level of the default tariff cap for the April-June period. At £1,690 for dual-fuel (2,700kWh electricity, 11,500kWh, direct debit), this is the lowest level since winter 2021/22, but still above the levels that preceded this period. The updated cap level also includes a temporary additional payment of £28 per year to cover additional debt costs, this being set at a higher level than the position set out in Ofgem's December consultation. Despite the fall in the cap, it is clear that the cost of energy remains a challenge for many, and it is imperative that government, Ofgem and the energy industry work together at pace to ensure that those who are vulnerable are appropriately supported. The tariff cap announcement is a potential trigger point for switching given likely widespread media coverage of the figure, and the cessation of the Market Stabilisation Charge at end March removes a potential impediment to fixed price offerings. However, Ofgem is extending the 'Ban on Acquisition Tariffs' for a further 12 months, although it plans to ask for views and feedback about shortening this extension to six months. I don't expect a return to the aggressive pricing of yesterday, and very much view innovative tariff offerings and customer service as the key drivers of future switching behaviour in the domestic energy market, particularly as the way in which we interact with the energy system evolves as we navigate the energy transition pathway. #netzero #costofliving #energytransition #pricecap #socialtariffs #switching #EVs #decarbonisationofheat

According to sources, the government has raised gas tariffs for industries, including textiles and captive power plants, to secure a new IMF bailout package. Gas prices have increased from Rs2,750 to Rs3,000 per million British thermal units (mmbtu) immediately. This move is expected to boost Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL) revenues by approximately Rs92 billion annually, aiming for a combined revenue of Rs1,029 billion, up from the previous target of Rs898 billion. Further gas price hikes are planned for January 2025 to meet International Monetary Fund requirements, expected to generate an additional Rs40 billion. The IMF has also demanded the removal of captive power plants from the national gas grid by January 2025, aligning their rates with Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG). The Finance Ministry has assured that gas rates for consumers outside the industrial sector will remain unchanged to minimize impact on residential and other sectors. #GasTariffs #IMFBailout #EconomicPolicy #PakistanEconomy #IndustryNews #SuiSouthernGas #CaptivePower #Cohortmax
