Cambridge has retained its ranking as the most intensive science and technological cluster in the world in a new report ranking global innovation. The 2023 Global Innovation Index evaluates the top-level innovative capacity of countries and economies and identifies local concentrations of world-leading activity. The index establishes science and technology clusters by analysing patent-filing activity and scientific article publication, and documenting the geographical areas around the world with the highest density of inventors and scientific authors. Oxford has been recognised as one of the top science and innovation clusters in the world, according to new data released from the upcoming 2023 Global Innovation Index (GII). The Oxford cluster, which covers an approximate 5-10k radius from the centre of Oxford, filed 2,934 PCT patent applications and published 34,176 scientific articles, both per 1 million inhabitants over the last five years, making it the third science and technology cluster by intensity (relative to population density) in 2023. https://lnkd.in/dRRuyqkY

📚 An important explanation for a lack of trust in science and technology is that science is perceived to be out of touch with societal concerns and needs, and this is especially true for emarginated audiences. 🧐 Just like trust in science involves various trust relationships (from the micro-level of trusting individuals to the macro-level of trusting policy mechanisms for governing science), societal trust in science is also complex and multifaceted. Even Eurobarometer 2021 surveys from 2021 unveiled European citizens’ conflicting positions towards science and technology. 🔎 Specifically, 82% of people surveyed exhibited a high level of interest in science and technology, but approximately half of EU citizens (57%) believe that Research & Innovation is accompanied by challenges, such as the idea that science and technology mostly improve the lives of who is already better off. 👐 Against this backdrop, we want to understand how we can make science align with societal concerns and needs. We will cross-reference data on areas of societal concern from IANUS’ findings and previous EU-projects to elaborate policy recommendations from data-driven knowledge. 💡Our goal is to turn the insights, knowledge, and concepts generated in the IANUS project into accessible and effective recommendations to support open science efforts. 📌 For more information on the IANUS project and our future steps: https://lnkd.in/dD7DxEyn

Published new data that shows Oxford ranked third most intensive science and innovation cluster in the world. This is part of my annual Global Innovation Index (GII - https://lnkd.in/g8EDvft) a pulse check on the state of innovation, to be published in full next week. I’m proud of the role the University, including our School, has played in this result, through our exceptional research and our thriving innovation ecosystem. In today’s age of breakneck technological advances and significant environmental challenges, the GII has never been more important. 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙣𝙚𝙬 4𝙏𝙐 𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙃𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 From January 2024, the four technical universities are pooling their knowledge and expertise in the field of the history of technology in the 𝟒𝐓𝐔 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲. The new centre aims to provide students, engineers and the wider audience with a historical awareness of the role that technology and engineers played in societal transitions in the past two centuries, as well as to develop working methods that makes such knowledge actionable today. The 4TU.History of Technology centre will stimulate and facilitate research, education and public debate on the role of technology in societal transitions then and now. 'A better understanding of the history of technology helps us to broaden our view and enables us to gain more nuanced insights on the connections between technological, social and environmental change. How can we use such insights to make ongoing transitions more inclusive and more sustainable?' says scientific director Erik van der Vleuten. Cambridge named as the most intensive science and technology cluster in the world Cambridge is an incredible city, with more patents per population than anywhere else in the UK. I am so lucky to have lived and worked here for a decade. Cambridge ideas - and the technologies developed here - have shaped the world, there's no doubt. But how do we harness this concentration of intellectual capital for the benefit of more people? How do we stay focussed on the biggest problems facing societies around the world? How do we ensure that our next innovations put us on better long-term pathways, while meeting immediate needs? And how do we do this within a markets-based system where profit and purpose may seem to diverge? For me the answer is #sustainability.
