#EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK is the European Commission’s flagship awareness-raising campaign on sustainable urban mobility. It promotes behavioural change in favour of active mobility, public transport, and other clean, intelligent transport solutions. #UPPERProjectEu warmly encourages all Cities&Regions within the Consortium to participate in the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK, which takes place from 16 - 22 September each year. Only the official local authority of the participating town or city may register on behalf of that city.

Great to see the Barcelona declaration recognising the need for greater social and territorial cohesion, the importance of road safety and the importance of all forms of transport. CEDR’s work focuses on improving our Pan-European Road Network (PERN), explicitly addressing the importancd of the entire national road networks and not just those that traverse Europe - think local.

📍 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻 Orihuela
Today's visit takes place in Spain! The municipality of Orihuela is located in the province of Alicante, inside the Valencian Community of Spain, 30 km far from the Mediterranean coast. Orihuela is the capital of the La Vega Baja del Segura region and provides important services to other smaller municipalities with a total population of 150.000.
𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘝𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘯 Orihuela – 𝘏𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴
🛤 Orihuela is well connected to the main cities of Murcia, Elche and Alicante by bus and train from the station in the centre of Orihuela, while the connections between the town and the rural areas are not very well developed. More than 30% of the trips are from the suburbs to the city centre.
🚨 With a large number of villages scattered across a vast territory, the city struggles with insufficient public transport and sustainable mobility infrastructure, leading to a high car dependency among residents.
↘ Like many other cities in Europe, Orihuela is experiencing a population decrease and economic challenges, further complicating efforts to address its transportation and environmental issues. Connecting the small towns to the urban center is particularly challenging due to the significant distances involved, especially between coastal areas and the city center.
🚀 Efforts are already underway to tackle all these challenges surrounding sustainable mobility. Through the settlement of partnership with key-stakeholders, the city aims to foster a bottom-up approach to ensure inclusivity, transparency, and commitment from the local community.
🗺 Orihuela’s Integrated Action Plan wil certainly focus on improving the connectivity between rural villages like San Bartolomé or Arneva and the central hub of Orihuela. As climate change effects like rising temperatures 🌡 become more pronounced, any strategies aimed at improving transportation and sustainability must also consider these environmental factors to ensure long-term viability and resilience.

Many cities in Europe are rushing to fine-tune all the details of their project proposal under the 2nd call for proposals of European Urban Initiative, which is closing tomorrow.
The call is noteworthy not only for a massive allocation of resources (120 million euros), but most of all for its capacity of stimulating the creation of disruptive ideas and the establishment of new forms of collaboration between local authorities and innovative local partners.
The projects that are going to be approved in 2024 on Greening tourism, Sustainable tourism and Harnessing talents in shrinking cities will represent a point of reference on urban innovation in Europe, with a strong potential in terms of replicability at EU level and beyond

Travelling to visit your friends and family or dropping off kids at after school activities are not a concern - if traffic is running smoothly. And Denmark, like any other country, needs continuous development of its infrastructure 🚌🚓🚗
In this video, Senior Market Director Michael Knørr Skov voices his opinion on why we need a long-term and green national mobility plan that is both socially and environmentally sustainable.
“A long-term national mobility plan for Denmark should take a holistic approach and consider the users of mobility solutions, how it relates to our cities and its impact on resource consumption. Furthermore, it should contribute to enhancing sustainability, both environmentally and socially,” he explains.
