🚲 We don't stop moving! #NLontheMOVE Tessel Van Essen and the Embassy team were pleased to host the UK premiere of ‘When We Cycle’, a documentary by Dutch filmmakers Gertjan Hulster & Arne Gielen. The film aims to inspire us to continue to create the space for everyone to discover the joys and benefits of cycling as a means of transportation, sport, lifestyle and freedom of movement. 📽 The film stirred a lively debate of their visions for cycling - and for our cities and urban space - in the future, with panelists Mariam Draaijer from Joyriders Britain, Simon Munk of London Cycling Campaign, David Hibbs of Sustrans and Emily Cherry from The Bikeability Trust, expertly led by Chris Bruntlett from the Dutch Cycling Embassy. When We Cycle is the 3rd episode of a series on cycling in the Netherlands, with this episode focused on the future of cycling. ▶ Let’s keep the cycle revolution going! The Netherlands has been working on sharing cycling knowledge with the UK since the Embassy joined forces with the London Cycling Campaign in 2012 on the #LoveLondonGoDutch campaign. Working with many partners, we enjoy sharing our experience on making our cities and country ever more cycle friendly, and how the Netherlands still works hard to continue to do so today. Why? We believe that cycling can be a key factor in addressing major challenges, such as climate change, the energy crisis, the health crisis, urbanisation and air quality. Integrating cycling and public transport—is that what you call a win-win? 🚏🚲 Last week the Nordic Cycle Power Network met for its third workshop, discussing the topic of cycling integration. Philip Amaral from the European Cyclists' Federation introduced the concept and benefits of 'multimodal systems' that create a network of different and combined mobility options. We learned that about 90% of people travel to public transport on foot 🚶♀️ and that enabling more cycling to stations can increase the distance people would take to get there. Furthermore, giving access to shared bike options can support growing demand for public transportation and reduce resilience on private cars. 💡 Mette Granberg from HSL Helsingin seudun liikenne presented three bike-share initiatives in the Helsinki region, while David Gaarsdal Rønnov took us behind the scenes of the Supercykelstier (Cycle Superhighways) explaining how public transport nodes in the Cycle Superhighway infrastructure can serve to increase both cycling and public transportation. Now we're rolling into 2024 with exciting stops ahead! Stay tuned. Big success today for anyone who rides a bike in Europe. Could be you take your kids to school in a cargo bike. Or you ride to work. Or take rides just to be outside. Or you ride for sport. Today’s Cycling Declaration proposed by the European Commission aims to put #cycling up front so it can get the political, financial and regulatory attention it needs so we can all enjoy the benefits of more people cycling: cleaner air, low emissions, healthier society, safer streets. We’ve worked hard for this, with our industry partners, with people in the Commission who’ve shared our ambitions for more and better cycling for everyone in Europe. Also with leaders in the European Parliament who aspire to make our towns and cities more liveable. In the next years we’ll want to see much of the stuff in this declaration reflected in new laws and policies. That’s for tomorrow. Today take a moment to celebrate. Ride your bike and know that in Brussels you’re not ignored.

Cycle of life. One of the nicest things about living in the Netherlands is the ease with which one can dash about the whole country on a bike 🚲 The Netherlands puts its bike users’ needs front and centre. Cycling in this country is systemic and locals are world known for their lack of fear. The Dutch have a myriad of innovative ways to bike around —including for a cup of coffee ☕️. How it all began. By the 1890s, the Dutch people were already creating bike paths specialised for cyclists. Today, the Netherlands cycle network total length is above 35,000 kilometers (21,748 miles). National maps cover the entire nation cycleways. Some of the most beautiful cycle paths in the country we have biked are: * Hoog Veluwe National Park * The Dunes of Texel National Park and The Windmills at UNESCO Werelderfgoed Kinderdijk It’s not news. More and more people around the world know that a bicycle is an indispensable tool for urban life. Marrakech in Morocco is Africa’s first city to have introduced a bike-share scheme. The service is known as Medina. With innovation in the cycling industry increasing, the market is only going in one direction and sales of electric two-wheeled transport is nothing but on the up. What’s next for us this summer? For us or for anyone keen to work up a sweat, a stop we aim to visit in Europe this year is the wielerdroom, or velodrome, in Belgium. The Flemish sports agency Sport Vlaanderen houses a sports complex with an indoor racing track — it opened in late 2023. Events like the European Track Championships are scheduled to take place here in the next few years. In this flexible space people of all ages and fitness levels are welcome for a spin. We can’t wait to check it out! https://lnkd.in/e3dEwdqt #cycling #mobility #sports #futuremobility #jointheride

As the Tour de France captivates the world, we're reminded of British Cycling's incredible journey from a century of struggles to a decade of dominance through the power of marginal gains. For nearly 100 years, British Cycling was synonymous with underperformance. No British cyclist had ever won the Tour de France. But in 2003, Dave Brailsford stepped in as the new performance director, bringing with him a revolutionary approach. Brailsford's strategy was simple yet profound: make tiny, 1% improvements in every aspect of cycling. From redesigning bike seats to optimizing sleep and even painting the inside of the team truck white to spot dust, every small change added up. The result? British cyclists dominated the 2008 Beijing Olympics, set records in the 2012 London Olympics, and won the Tour de France five times from 2012 to 2017. This success underscores the power of consistent, incremental improvements. At Busch Vacuum Solutions, we embrace this principle. Our OTTO remote monitoring solutions help businesses achieve marginal gains through predictive maintenance, reducing downtime and preventing costly breakdowns, adding up to significant efficiency improvements. As we watch the Tour de France, let’s be inspired by the British Cycling team’s story. Embrace marginal gains for extraordinary success in your operations. The #EuropeanCommission published the European Declaration on Cycling. Quote: "We aim to unleash the full potential of cycling in the EU. This Declaration recognises cycling as one of the most sustainable, accessible and inclusive, low-cost and healthy forms of transport and recreation, and its key importance for European society and the economy. The Declaration should serve as a strategic compass for existing and future policies and initiatives related to cycling." Such comprehensive and long term vision can bring back cycling to the public realm. It takes time, money and action from a wide variety of stakeholders to rebalance the built infrastructure that has been favoring the car in cities for the last 75 years or so. It also takes time for people to start using safe, comfortable and versatile cycling infrastructure, once built. I am looking forward to a policy drive in the UK that can achieve exactly that.
