Cycling Industries Europe, European Cyclists' Federation and Confederation of the European Bicycle Industry - CONEBI are delighted to announce that the European Cycling Declaration was released this morning by the European Commission during the European Mobility Days in Seville. The Commission proposes establishing a set of principles to help unleash the full potential of cycling in the EU, paving the way for increased investment in the Cycling Industry and creating favourable conditions for cycling. The Declaration will fulfil the potential of cycling so that it can help achieve EU mobility, climate, environmental, health, industrial & social objectives, stating that the use of cycling should increase substantially. It lays down a comprehensive roadmap for enhancing cycling infrastructure, encouraging public participation, and ensuring the safety and well-being of cyclists across the region. CIE CEO Kevin Mayne spoke today at the POLIS Network Cycling Declaration breakfast, alongside POLIS Secretary General Karen Vancluysen and European Cyclists' Federation CEO Jill Warren. The panel praised the #EUCyclingDeclaration as a pivotal policy document for the cycling community and covered several highlights:  📈 Recognition of the cycling industry's potential to contribute to economic growth 🤝 Building capacity and structures to support Europe’s growing cycling economy 🌐 The significance of collecting and using data to benchmark mobility policies and ridership 🚴♂️ The importance of developing multi-modal solutions focused on sustainable transport 🏡 Exploring new solutions for bike sharing in suburban areas   CIE’s expert groups have been pivotal to identify, discuss and promote policy solutions that enable cycling like the ones covered during today’s event. If you want to share your views and learn from peers across the industry, contribute to better cycling policies and collaborate on projects for the collective good of the industry, our door is open! It's great to see the EU's main institutions working together to make cycling an option for more Europeans. The declaration lists positive commitments and future improvements. But there is a trap in positive thinking: the idea that things can be added on top of faulty, dangerous and patchy infrastructure leads to less, not more, safety for cyclists. Together with Zoltán Sipos and Barbora Janauerová, I analysed investments into infrastructure in a project funded by Journalismfund Europe, and later continued the analysis as a fellow at the School of Transnational Governance. Living in Florence allowed me to become a commuter cyclist myself. These are the commitments I would like to see in the declaration: - Not a single euro is to be spent on infrastructure that endangers cyclists; - No more investment into roads without a vulnerable road users' needs assessment; - Cross-border police cooperation to crack down on bike thefts by organised crime; - Cycling-related ad hoc conditionalities for all countries every time they receive EU funds; - Designing investment to replace private car commutes with cycling, rather than sprinkle a few favours to cyclings in car-obsessed contexts. It’s been adopted!! Yesterday ‘the EU took another important step in reducing transport emissions by adopting the European Declaration on Cycling. ….. The declaration recognises cycling as a sustainable, accessible, and affordable means of transport, with strong added value for the EU economy. It includes clear commitments, such as safe and coherent cycling networks in cities, better links with public transport and secure parking spaces and access to recharging points for e-bikes. These commitments shall be taken at EU, national regional and local level. These are all necessary elements in improving the quality and quantity of cycling infrastructure across Member States and making cycling more attractive to the public.’ (Text from the EU announcement)

It's a bright day for the EU cycling industry ☀️ The EU Parliament, the Council and the EU Commission proposed yesterday the European Declaration on Cycling 📣 This includes 36 commitments to boost bicycle usage across EU 🚀🚲 As these are the two biggest barriers to cycling in Belgium, I'm particularly pleased to see commitments to ✅Improve the quality, quantity, continuity and attractiveness of cycling infrastructure ✅Improve security at public bike parking spaces and increase efforts to tackle the issue of bike theft Among all these commitments, I also take note of commitment to encourage companies, organisations and institutions to promote cycling through cycle to work incentives, the provision of company (e-)bikes, … which is at the heart of HOOBA's mission 🚲📱♻️ “Cycling is one of the most sustainable, accessible and inclusive, low-cost and healthy forms of transport, and is of key importance for EU society and the economy” Full Declaration in comment ⬇️ #Sustainablemobility #Europe #Cycling #Mobility
