Since I entered Canada, every dollar I’ve earned has come from working in sales. Below are 10 things I’ve learned about sales that most people won’t tell you: 1. The top salesperson on a team is rarely the most skilled. They simply want it more and outwork everyone else. 2. A strong sales culture can make or break a team. 3. If you’re looking for an easy job with guaranteed pay, sales isn’t for you. But if you’re willing to bet on yourself, hone your skills, and fully commit, you can make more money than you ever imagined. 4. Focus on the leaderboard. Beat everyone else, and the money will follow. This is why athletes and competitive people often excel in sales. 5. Someone can teach you how to sell, but they can’t give you the hunger. You have to bring that yourself. 6. If you’re in a slump and just hoping next week or next quarter you will magically get better, think again. Something in your process needs fixing—self-reflect, review, and make the necessary adjustments. 7. Consistency is more valuable than breaking records. 8. From a management perspective, KPIs and numbers are important to track. But the biggest misconception is thinking the person with the highest close rate is the best salesperson. The best salesperson is the one who makes the most money. 9. You can’t control whether someone buys or not. Some will, some won’t—it’s that simple. You can give the best presentation of your life, ask all the perfect questions, hit all their pain points, objection handle beautifully and still not close the deal. Conversely, you could show up tired, fumble through your words, and still land a sale. Detach emotionally from the outcome. Attach yourself to the actions, focus on your process, frameworks, and presentation—be great at what you do, and the sales will follow. Always strive to improve. If you’re not growing, you’re dying. Welcome to somewhere in the Mediterranean 🌊 I love sea days on a ship, because it brings back memories of 10 years I worked on ships, but also because it's a perfect example of how we LOVE to buy. I'm sat here now having a coffee and: - The shops are full - The Casino is already getting busy - Luxury watches are selling - The spa if fully booked - Artwork at the value of a 4 bedroom house in Hertfordshire is being auctioned Sure enough, we're in the midst of a financial crisis (recession) and yep, it's terrible what's happening in most of the world. But, in sales (which I teach and have done for 10 years), you can't let an inch of negativity creep in or it will sink the ship (pun intended). What most also don't realise, you can be deeply compassionate about what's happening around the world and still go and sell thousands, if not hundreds of thousands per month of your product and service. In fact, it's necessary to be both. Selling from our own pocket or worrying about the finances of others, stops you from achieving the best thing of all.... Helping the client in front of you right now. I've always believed, when you stand for your product, know it can create change, you have a responsibility to sell it. After all, sales isn't what we think, because the best salespeople you never know they're selling, it's simply a conversation.

There are many key factors involved within the process of a sale. From the initial prospecting, building rapport, overcoming objectives, establishing BATNA "Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement", to closing the sale. Within transactional sales, the process, generally speaking will stop after a deal is closed as both parties have what they need. You need a new jacket, Reiss sell them, you try on, buy it for the price they ask for without any negotiation involved and walk away. However, in more statical sales, such as B2B, and Account Management, in addition to the processes outlined in the below image, the strategic aftercare piece is also vital. Continued communications to ensure the customer / business is happy with the goods or services you provided, identifying additional products, upgrades or anything else they may need, is key within cross selling and upselling. By staying in constant communication, having a strong understanding of their business, their needs and how you can assist; are key to maintain strong commercial relationships, intern generating addition revenue from additional sales. What was your first sales job and what did it teach you? 🤔 When I left full-time education, sales wasn't a career path I would have chosen being an introvert and socially awkward!! However, I fell into sales whilst backpacking in Australia back in 2001 as I needed funds to continue my travels. The only job I could find was selling stuff from a suitcase 'door-to-door' in Perth, Western Australia. 🐨 Think an Australian Del-Boy! 🤣 I had to be in the office at 7.30 every morning, 6 days a week with the aim to knock on 100 doors and make $100 a day (then you get to ring the bell). It was also COMMISSION ONLY. 🤑 Let's just say it was character building! 😀 Below is a picture of me whilst on a 'road trip' to Margaret River and the 'Giggle Bugs' we sold and we sold them all!! 💪 So what did I learn..... Every morning we had a sales meeting and a pep talk to give us motivated for the day ahead and there were a couple of sayings that I will never forget. 📢 'Your attitude dictates your altitude' - I loved this as it helped me build resilience by trusting in the process, putting me out of comfort zone and that hard work can get results! 'Every door, every floor in every store' - Door to Door sales is a numbers game and it is important to maximising selling opportunities. You understand that not everyone will buy from you, but the people that do maybe behind the door that you least expect! I also learnt the importance of trust and building a rapport which is hard to do when selling door to door! People didn't always buy from me, but they bought from me when I had a product they liked (like the giggle bugs....they went down a storm 😁). Sometimes it was all about timing! Today, my approach to sales is very different but the principles are the same. I will never forget my experience in Perth and what I learnt from Vaughan Bradshaw! 🙏 #socialselling #positivemindset #trusttheprocess

What skills did I carry over from 7 years in the motor industry in Ireland, to the real estate industry in Dubai? 1. Sales is sales. Learn your product, match your clients enthusiasm, over come the objections and always listen more than you speak. 2. Be proud of what you are selling, believe in your product, don’t settle for a product (or a company) that doesn’t make you smile. 3. Find mentors, someone always knows more than you. Appreciate them and listen to them. 4. Referrals and repeat customers, will not be beaten. Treat people right and give every client your all, it will come back around. 5. Answer in real time, time kills deals. Sales is 24/7. Answer the phone call, reply to the message. People lose deals all the time because they are too slow. 6. Manage your emotions, the highs are high and the lows are low. Don’t get caught up in either. 7. Sales is a lifestyle, you are always on.
