Saturday edition of Word of Advice: ABD (All But Dissertation) is not a designation. It is a status that indicates you completed all coursework and any necessary examinations in a doctorate program. It also signifies the transition from student to candidate status. However, the letters ABD do not belong behind your name. It's equivalent to saying you are John/Jane Doe, High School Senior. While I encourage everyone to celebrate the milestones and victories, let's make sure as academics we're acting accordingly. I have seen this error several times and thought I would help someone out. Be well! #scholarship #leadership #leadershipexpert #leadershipeffectiveness #doctoraljourney #education

Higher education leaders have a golden opportunity in this current crisis—if they are brave enough to acknowledge what is broken and commit to repairing it. Integrity Accountability Civil discourse Critical thinking Intellectual honesty Nuance This should be “college 101.” As Elisha Wiesel, son of Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Holocaust survivor Eli Wiesel, wrote in an op-ed published today, “It’s time for university leaders to do their job. It’s time for them to teach.” Teach students how to think, not what to think. Teach them to navigate even the most complex and emotionally laden topics with humility, curiosity, and dialogue, rather than as an exercise in intellectual combat. If we can’t do this work within the sandbox of our academic institutions, where can we do it? #leadership #education #higherlearning

The only thing shared governance does in higher ed is prevent change. As as former, tenured professor, I tried, repeatedly, to engage the faculty in my program to discuss the possible need for curriculum changes. Given the fact that our curriculum had not changed in 20 years, all I asked is if we might consider making some revisions. Unfortunately, one senior professor was able to successfully derail the opening to this discussion, over and over again. And so, for five years, when I was there, nothing changed. Two years after I left my program, the curriculum is still stagnant. And, students are still paying tens of thousands of dollars, each year, for the "privilege" of receiving a two-decade old education at an R1. Speak to truth and call this issue out for what it is: corruption.

“Shared governance is a system designed, in my view, to make sure that any changes are very slow and very incremental. Anytime you work toward consensus within a large, heterogeneous group, you going to probably end up taking a lot if time – and with an outcome that is least objectionable to the most people, which is antithetical to anything revolutionary or transformational.” -Brian Rosenberg, former president of Macalester College This is set against the backdrop of the many converging challenges facing higher ed. The need for transformational change in our nation’s colleges and universities has never been greater or more urgently needed... #highered #collegesanduniversities #leadership #faculty #governance #transformationalchange
