The growing threat of wildfires poses a significant risk to our railway infrastructure. This Railway Technology & Future Rail article underscores the urgent need for robust, resilient systems. Enter Dryad Networks' Silvanet solution: our solar-powered sensors detect wildfires during the critical smoldering phase, often well before flames are visible. With detection speeds within minutes from ignition, our system enables rapid response. Last week, we announced that our next-gen sensors will be equipped with Kinéis' satellite technology, making them perfect for linear deployments like railways and power lines. 🛤️ This innovation will ensure rapid response and minimize damage, safeguarding assets and enhancing operational reliability. Phew, it's hot out there! 🌡️ Did you know that when Britain enjoys a summer heatwave, rails in direct sunshine can be as much as 20°C hotter than the air temperature? Naturally, this intense heat puts immense pressure on our rail infrastructure, leading to buckling tracks and sagging power lines. This article explores how the UK's railways are adapting to these extreme conditions and what innovative solutions like RailSense IoT track monitoring are doing to keep trains on track. #RailSense #heatonthetracks #heatwave #trackmonitoring #IoT #buckling #remote #predictivemaintenance #iotsolutions

These parameters help the system predict and respond to fire outbreaks by combining data trends and sensor alerts in real-time, enabling rapid decision-making. Alerts in the IoT-based fire detection system are triggered through a combination of real-time sensor data monitoring and predefined thresholds for critical parameters. These alerts are sent via communication networks (internet, mobile, or proprietary networks) to local authorities, rangers, and firefighters, who receive the coordinates and status of the fire for quick response. https://iot.org.ge/74/

Technology is not a replacement for traditional pumps and hoses, but it is offering new and better ways to help #firefighters combat #forestFires. For example, risk #analytics to #predict if an active fire can "jump the lake" is now possible. Learn from Justin Nicholas ( BC Wildfire Service research and #innovation officer) and Mathieu Bourbonnais (UBC Okanagan researcher and assistant professor) on how combining high-impact #fireScience research with technologies like #IoT sensors, next generation #wireless connectivity, and #AI can help communities (especially those in #rural and remote locations) detect and fight #fires when they happen. It could also tell them where they need to apply mitigation measures like thinning and prescribed burning. Dr. Bourbonnais is also a #researcher on Smart Forests in the collaborative research program between The University of British Columbia and Rogers Communications, leading a #research on building community and ecological fire resilience using real-time monitoring of #forest conditions through #5G and next-generation fuel models.

"If railroads can get better data on their vulnerability to buckling — like specific track temperatures over wide areas, instead of relying on inferences from local air temperatures — they could more accurately determine how much to slow trains as a precaution." One of the interesting aspects of measuring new things in new places is the realization of things we take for granted. Did you know sand is used to assist with tram's braking or that salt water in a sewer increase H2S which in turn accelerates infrastructure deterioration? One of these learnings has been the phenomena of rail buckling. In short, when it gets too hot, rail kinks causing tremendously dangerous operating conditions. Operators stop or slow down trains to manage this risk which in turn carries significant cost for rail operators and the wider economy. "1,800 feet of rail expands by more than an inch for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature increase" The lack of granular data on rail is in stark contrast to the data we get off road infrastructure with apps and data as common as Waze. Unlike Waze however, in rail we unfortunately can't gather the data from the vehicle (train) using the rail- it's too late. Historically, generating more data from rail was cost prohibitive. Given the proliferation of micro computation, low power networks and augmentation of terrestrial networks with non-terrestrial networks, greater data density is feasible today. Greater density of rail data can help manage the risk and reduce delay minutes as we've shown with our deployment with Aurizon ( https://lnkd.in/g8r2gWXN ) In this interesting article with commentary from the Association of American Railroads, the challenge and some of the innovative solutions are explored. https://lnkd.in/gWHzK8uh #smartrail #heavyrail #iot #kallipr #digitization
