Today marks 110 years since Ford installed the moving assembly line. Bringing the work to stationary workers was not a novel ideal, but at the scale & size of Ford, it was revolutionary. What happened at Stellantis should serve as an example. Wise call by workers at Mercedes-Benz. A short term gain, could inevitably lead to long term pain. The consumer is unable to continue accepting these costs, and "days in stock/inventory" should serve as a wake up call for Mr Fain's power trip. Rather focus on keeping the doors open at the factories. Creating these "us and them" situations will end badly. Considering the workers, OEMs and the consumer, will lead to a solution.
