If you're a novice retail investor (accredited or non-accredited) and you're wondering why you don't have access to quality deal flow, it's because issuers know that professional investors HAVE to put money to work so they are typically the targets for the good deals. Think of retail investors like hobbyist and professional investors like, well, professional investors. If you were spending money and soliciting investors, which one would you target? So, if you want to get rid of that "retail investor" label and get access to the quality deals, start making more bets, get involved in angel groups, join syndicates and show that you are comfortable putting money to work even if it's only small amounts but at high volume.

🍟 Kudos to Wendy's for exploring alternative pricing models; however, the communication and execution of these efforts leaves much to be desired 🍔 For those catching up, Wendy's recently unveiled plans to trial dynamic pricing, borrowing a page from ride-sharing platforms such as Uber, aiming to further monetize during periods of peak customer demand. As part of the pricing team at L.E.K. Consulting, I couldn't help but reflect on the potential implications and risks associated with this move. In the fast-food arena, where competition is fierce, customer allegiance is pivotal, and barriers to switching merchants is incredibly low (there are over 6,000 Wendy locations in the U.S. alone), openly experimenting with dynamic pricing can be an incredibly risky venture. The recent public backlash and Wendy's subsequent clarification that "dynamic pricing" is not akin to "surge pricing" (?) underscore the delicate balance between innovation and preserving customer loyalty. I'm sure some customers will be excited about this announcement, but the whole idea immediately raises so many questions and flags. How is it possible for a founder to massively overleverage a company, declare bankruptcy to write off that debt, and reopen with the same name and concept - right down to the same social media accounts - a few weeks later? It's really hard to understand how that is possible without, at best, blatantly gaming the system (I'll keep my speculations on what the "at worst" might look like to myself) and that in turn is hard to square with Foxtrot's purported values. How will CPG companies, particularly the small ones that Foxtrot heavily relied on, feel about a new order from the company popping up after they were left holding the bag on inventory or unpaid invoices the last time? How will prospective employees feel when they read accounts of the company summarily dismissing everyone last time, without notice or severance? Enjoy the topsy-turvy world of late stage private company valuations! Lacework - having raised $1.9B & with last valuation at $8.3B - is being acquired by a rival (Wiz) for upto $200M. For a company that just raised $1.3B just over 2 years ago at the $8.3B valuation & with $100M ARR & multiple RIFs, things must be pretty dismal. Perhaps the typical long term metrics investors love in DD - NRR, LTV/CAC, Payback - didn’t help? For Wiz, assuming customers don’t attrition overnight, getting a not so small ARR stream at 2x isn’t that bad after all! Klarna - the European BNPL darling - having raised a down round (at 6.7B valuation in 2022 from a prior $45B) is in talks to go public at a $20B valuation. A rising tide lifts all boats. The converse is also true! It may appear to a jury of 12 common jurors that valuation of private companies may be in the eyes of the valuer! After all, Money and all associated concepts are human creations - There once was a time when one tulip bulb sold for 3x the yearly income of a Dutch merchant!
