There is still time to fund the local governments and upgrade the existing capabilities and capacity to to meet the challenge of easily handling the approaching catastrophic fire threats and season. All levels could benefit from Catastrophic planning training on best practices and available tools. Senior management needs to know that “force multipliers’ exist and that training can be provided to those concerned with vulnerability reduction.

Operating heavy machinery in wildfire-prone areas requires vigilance and precaution. Here are some essential tips to prevent wildfires: ◾️ Clear debris: Remove any flammable materials from the work area, including dry vegetation, leaves, and branches. ◾️ Maintain equipment: Regularly inspect and maintain machinery to prevent sparks or overheating that could ignite fires. ◾️ Monitor weather conditions: Stay informed about weather forecasts and fire danger ratings. Avoid operating machinery during hot, dry, or wind conditions. ◾️ Create fire breaks: When feasible, use bulldozers to create fire breaks, which can help contain wildfires and protect surrounding areas. ◾️ Have a fire safety plan: Develop and communicate a fire safety plan with all crew members. Remember, wildfire prevention is everyone's responsibility. Stay vigilant and prioritize safety at all times. #WildfirePrevention #GreatWestEquipment #ForestFirePrevention

The safety of our customers, employees and the communities we serve is our highest priority. We first began developing our Wildfire Safety Strategy in 2019 and continue to adapt it to address the elevated risks in Hawaii. Enhanced safety procedures in areas identified as being at risk for wildfires include: 1. Circuit breakers will be set to "trip" and shut off power quickly if a disruption is detected. (Known as "fast trip") 2. Lines will remain de-energized until a visual inspection of the affected area is performed and deemed safe to energize. 3. Visually inspecting the affected area provides an added safety measure and may lead to longer outages, especially at night. 4. Spotters will be sent to strategic locations during certain weather events, including red flag warnings by the weather service (heat, low humidity, high wind). We have also begun discussions with government, emergency response and community stakeholders to determine how a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program can be designed and implemented in a way that is appropriate for each county and its ability to ensure public safety when power is shut off, potentially for multiple days. A PSPS would shut off power in certain areas before extreme weather events as an additional means to reduce the risk of a wildfire. #Stay_Hydrated_Stay_Alive Water is essential for keeping us alive💦 As FIREFIGHTERS🧑🏼🚒we know that the water is especially important for us In order to effectively fight fires, we need water for our engines and equipment🚒. However, water is also crucial for ourselves, important for us to stay hydrated throughout the day, not just during active firefighting. To ensure adequate hydration, firefighters should: • Drink water regularly throughout the day, not just during active firefighting. • Be aware of the signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth, dizziness, headaches, and dark urine, and take immediate steps to rehydrate if these symptoms occur. In summary, proper hydration is a fundamental aspect of a firefighter’s health and performance, directly impacting their safety, effectiveness, and well-being. #hydration #water #heatstroke #firefighters #firefighting #emergency
