Reducing and/or eliminating SO2 (Sulphur Dioxide) in winemaking has been a career objective for many decades. Determining production protocols and considerations for reducing SO2 use began in my early 20’s in the mid-1980’s with observation of wines in the lab at differing pH levels. Prior to an understanding or common industry considerations of ‘molecular SO2’, SO2 levels commonly increased to the detriment of overall quality. In recent years, products have become available to help reduce SO2 levels without leaving wines exposed to oxidation and/or susceptible to harmful spoilage organisms. I’ve worked with and trialed many methods but only until the last 2 years have I discovered specific natural tannin products that are truly effective. Attached are two products; 1) EBX Barrel - An SO2 replacement for empty barrel storage, made from organic tannins and selected natural phenolic compounds, and; 2) EBX Anti-Ox - A “non-organoleptic” French oak extract that acts as a powerful oxygen molecule blocker, originally developed as an organic food preservative. Used in conjunction for fine wine programs, especially effective in the production of “Wines Made from Organically Grown Grapes”, meeting the bottle-ready requirement of under 100ppm fixed SO2 has become a much more achievable goal. I am pleased to hear the government's announcement of £4.5 billion in funding for British manufacturing across eight key sectors. This investment demonstrates a commitment to supporting and strengthening the manufacturing industry in the UK, and it is a step in the right direction for the country's economic growth, energy security, and levelling-up efforts. The allocation of £960 million for clean energy, £2 billion for the automotive industry, and £975 million for aerospace, notably to support the development of zero-emission vehicles and energy-efficient aircraft equipment, reflects the government's focus on transitioning to a greener and more sustainable future. This funding will drive innovation and create job opportunities in these sectors. Furthermore, the commitment to the Green Industries Growth Accelerator and life sciences manufacturing demonstrates a forward-thinking approach, emphasising clean energy, carbon capture, and resilience in healthcare manufacturing. These investments align with the global transition to a net-zero economy and the need to address future health emergencies. The government's dedication to long-term planning and recognition of the importance of manufacturing, which contributes significantly to exports and employment, is commendable. This funding package is expected to attract private investment, enhance energy security, and create a more robust manufacturing ecosystem. The government's acceptance of Professor Dame Angela McLean's recommendations for regulation and standards in advanced manufacturing, as well as the expansion of the Made Smarter Adoption program and the commitment to research and development in connected and automated mobility, self-driving vehicles, and battery supply chains, signals a comprehensive and forward-looking approach to supporting manufacturing and innovation in the UK. Overall, this announcement is a positive step forward in ensuring that the UK remains a global leader in manufacturing, drives innovation, and contributes to economic growth and sustainability. It's essential to continue building on these investments and initiatives to secure a prosperous future for the manufacturing sector in the UK.

Biofach is my favorite food trade show ⬅ I've been attending it for almost 10 years now! That's long enough to lose all my hair! 😂 But this time, things seemed much slower in the organic food sector, again. In 2020, there were 3,792 exhibitors at Biofach, but this year, only 2,550 showed up 📉 Right, Biofach focuses on organic food, unlike big shows like SIAL or Anuga. But it looks like the organic food trend is taking more time to pick up after slowdown in 2022 🔄 What are your thoughts on the organic food industry's pace of growth?
