🚨 PUBLIC ADVISORY: Important Update for Workplace Health and Safety in Newfoundland and Labrador 🚨 As of today (March 1, 2024), significant amendments to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, passed last spring in the House of Assembly, are in effect. These changes introduce new requirements for occupational health and safety programs and committees, impacting workplaces across Newfoundland and Labrador. Key Changes: • Worker Threshold Increase: The requirement for occupational health and safety programs and committees now applies to workplaces with 20 or more workers, up from the previous threshold of 10. • Policy and Representative for Smaller Workplaces: Employers with fewer than 20 workers need to establish an occupational health and safety policy and appoint a representative. • Designate for Very Small Workplaces: Workplaces with fewer than six workers are required to appoint a health and safety designate. Why This Matters: These amendments aim to simplify compliance for smaller workplaces without compromising worker health and safety. By aligning our province's requirements with those of most other jurisdictions in Canada, we ensure a harmonized approach to workplace safety. • For Workplaces with 10-19 Workers: There's no need to disband if you currently have an active health and safety committee. While the Act sets a minimum standard, the best practice remains a collaborative approach to safety between management and labour. • Stay Informed and Prepared: Made Safe NL is here to support your transition under these new regulations. The new R/C services incentive program, Safer Through Achievements and Recognition, or STAR, aims to encourage the kinds of behaviors that happen constantly throughout the day in every office where employees make decisions that keep themselves and their teammates safe.
