Our offices recently buzzed with excitement as we hosted the second annual Bring a Kid to Work Day event! The halls were filled with laughter, curiosity, and the promise of a bright future. 🔆🌈 The kids had wide eyes and even wider smiles as they peeked into our world of engineering, surveying, environmental science, planning, and inspecting. 😃 We believe that these young minds are the architects of tomorrow. We hope to ignite their passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) by introducing them to it early. Who knows? Maybe one day, they’ll be the ones designing sustainable bridges, mapping out cities, or safeguarding our environment. 🌉🏙️🏞️ #DOWLInspires #FutureEngineers #BringAKidToWorkDay #WorkingParents #PeopleWhoMakeItHappen #OfficeCulture #STEMCareers

We spoke to Sam Rogozinski, Sustainability and Physics Engineer at Buro Happold after a successful Design West #ShapeMyCity session with Buro Happold and Vattenfall, with the support of Royal Academy of Engineering. We asked Sam a few questions about their career and experience. What are you interested in? Sustainability! In its broadest sense I'm interested in how we can make the world better for people and all the other beings on it. There's a concept called Doughnut Economics which is based on the idea that to truly 'sustain' we must live within the planet's ecological ceiling (looking after the environment) whilst supporting a just social foundation for all the people here. I like it because it shows how many different ways there are to contribute to a better future and how we need passionate and varied people working in many areas to really have a sustainable future. It shows how it really is a team event and we should all try to contribute whilst playing to our strengths. More specifically, in my current work I am interested in the intersection of how we can design better buildings that both reduce energy use, use low impact materials and provide comfortable spaces whilst being accessible. Also in how we find solutions in the 'sweet spots' and 'win-wins' that solve multiple problems at the same time. Personally, I'm into music and the creative arts, particularly crossover between jazz and silly electronic music and how the arts can support queer communities to thrive. What building or place inspires you? I really love walking around the harbour in Bristol and following the Avon out into Ashton Court and the countryside. The buzz of people having fun, the nature (particularly in the water!) and the relaxed and social vibe it brings out. It's a great example of public space that balances the built and natural environment. What piece of advice would you give your teenage self? Don't worry so much about where you will end up or exactly what you will do. Work (reasonably) hard and make the most of exploring your passions, find others that are excited by these things too and keep your eyes open for opportunities when they come up! #IngeniousAward #Ingenious #ShapeMyCity #ClimateSuperheroes #RenewableEnergy #STEM #HeatNetworks @RAEngNews @Royal Academy of Engineering

💡Ever imagined a world where every space, technology, and experience is designed with everyone's needs in mind? 🏢 𝐋𝐞𝐭'𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬. During my Marie-Curie fellowship, our recently published article revealed a gap in understanding and implementing Inclusive Design among architectural professionals. This often leads to buildings that fail to meet the diverse audience's needs and expectations. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞? The oldest of inventions is changing and changing fast. Cities came into being as communities grew - to meet the challenges of the 21st century, the urban environments we live in they continue to adapt and change. From adapting to new working patterns, to reaching net zero, it’s worth thinking about the ways in which we might influence future cities to our advantage. 👁️Last first day. This Monday was the last first of my masters’ degrees. Kickstarting allied & natural systems studio with Rebecca Solnit’s “Hope in the Dark,” I want to share my favourite parts. Hope is not believing that everything was, is or will be fine. Hope is facing the reality from climate change to information monopoly and acting. Raising and acting, big or small, but raising and acting. #spatialdesign #architecturaldesign #lightingdesign #designact

Is anyone at work paying attention to the company info you’re sending out? If the answer is “No”, then this could well be, because it’s not reaching employees at the right time and place. If you’re warning staff about an expected temporary closure of a building in a complex, for instance, this notification is most likely to resonate, if it’s displayed near the place in question, as it’s then going to be read by the people who actually use it. Babraham Research Campus recently installed a network of 16 Signagelive-powered screens across 25 tenanted buildings, so they could deliver this kind of powerful contextual messaging. Scheduling messages to appear on-screen when and where the maximum relevant number of people can see them has actually done more than simply improve communications and engagement for Babraham Research Campus; it’s actually helped boost efficiency. With Signagelive, the screens can be pre-set to switch off in between scheduled posts, so that this eco-focused campus can make further energy-savings. Find out more directly from Samantha Jackson, Babraham Research Campus Marketing and Business Development Manager. #avtweeps #digitalsignage #casestudy #employeecommunications #energysaving #eco #digitaltransformation

Happy Earth Day 2024! On this Earth Day, I wanted to share some of the books that have made their way onto my bookshelf over the last few months. During my architecture studies and then in the world of work, naturally, the books I'd buy, or the books that would be suggested to me as 'must read' were heavily architecture or design-focused, however, more recently, I have been delving deeper into learning about the natural world and the impact that we have had on it throughout time. This has made me think about our place within this world and as a result, question the relationship between the built and natural environments. It has brutally but rightfully, pointed out the delicate balance at play between the two. As urban areas continue to grow, I think it is crucial for us to understand these wider ecosystems in order to truly minimise our environmental impact and further enhance the wellbeing of these ecosystems. While the more books I read in regard to this leave me with only more unanswered questions, I will go ahead anyway and ask for recommendations?.. #earthday #everydayisearthday #sustainability
