Implementing and revising the curriculum is an ongoing process, addressing industry regulations and technologies. Challenges in hiring experienced instructors persist, prompting long-term strategies like academic ranking and continuous faculty development programs to professionalize and upgrade qualifications. More than a week on from her participation at the International Safety Education Seminar in Linz, Austria, a brief introduction to Helen Underhill’s presentation: People who live in humanitarian and development settings, such as refugee and IDP camps, collective centres, and informal settlements, are exposed to fire hazards daily. They have knowledge that isn’t being acknowledged which limits how residents experience fire safety education (including recovery). A common approach within the humanitarian sector to ‘educate’ around fire safety is the distribution of posters or to deliver training by fire services. Helen argues that safety education in these settings needs to be shaped by the context and recognise how people live with fire risk, This is essential to move from ‘sensitisation’ to ‘critically conscious fire safety education’ that is inclusive and participatory. We can do this by being more creative, co-designing with residents and create a problem-posing pedagogy. A lot more was said, but the experience of sharing some of Helen’s work before and since joining Kindling shows there is much that can be done to create and embed meaningful fire safety education at a global scale: it’s time to collaborate, explore, pilot, learn, reflect and keep doing better!
