eVince microreactor boasts 8 years of nuclear power without using water A new microreactor, eVinci, developed by Westinghouse, has an amazing feature. It can function without water, paving the way for nuclear power to reach far-off locations where water might be scarce. The first such microreactor will come up in Saskatchewan, Canada, by the end of this decade. Unlike nuclear power plants, which often take years to build and become operational, microreactors offer a rapid way to transport and set up a power plant using nuclear fuel. As the name suggests, a microreactor is small enough to fit a transport truck or aircraft and can be quickly moved to a place in need of electricity. The concept is being tested as a response in the wake of a natural disaster or for military applications. However, most designs still require water either to convey heat from the core to steam turbines or to remove excess heat. eVinci's unique attribute is that it does not use water at all in its operation. Microreactor eVinci Nuclear power is set for a comeback as the world looks for better ways to meet its energy demand without emitting tons of carbon dioxide into the air. Power plants can use natural gas or nuclear fuel. The eVinci reactor has a shelf life of approximately 8 years and takes up a smaller area about the size of a swimming pool. This uses the same abbreviation as the EVINCI European validation of innovative nuclear Cogeneration project that was focused on developing a nuclear reactor capable of producing both electricity and high temperature heat for industrial processes. The residue from the reactor does not take up space approximately the size of a swimming pool but the issue of a long term storage and safety must be considered. This is the future of energy for the next 30 years at least….

Excelent work by everyone in the team working on this challenging test. One of the first assignments when I joined Fingrid in 2007 was to study system impacts of the test to other customers - it’s been a long project and lot’s of more detailed studies done by many experts. It’s an absolute honor to work with such a great team. After the test the whole system will be more robust and operating in more reliable manner when correction are done to issues that are revealed by the tests. As Pauli put it, real life tests are needed to compliment the simulation as not all issues are seen in the simulations.

Yesterday we performed an on-line fault ride-through test for TVO’s newest 1650 MW nuclear unit, Olkiluoto 3. While the test was successful from a system perspective, Olkiluoto 3 failed to ride through the fault and disconnected from the system. The cause is still under investigation. This is a good example of the necessity of a real-life fault ride-through test since this could not be seen in simulations. Now corrections can be made and plant will not trip during full production or in challenging production situation. Test setup and possible risks for the system stability were studied with extensive amount of EMT- and RMS-simulations. https://lnkd.in/dfnCURUi

Vogtle 4 set to enter commercial operation this year. It's the 2nd year in a row the USA has finally added a new reactor to our aging fleet. The plant will provide enough power for nearly ONE MILLION American homes. This is a Westinghouse AP1000 which comes with some major improvements over older designs: Safety Features: One of the hallmark features of the AP1000 is its passive safety systems that require no human intervention and can operate without electrical power or external water supply. This is a major advancement over older designs, which rely more on active safety systems. Simplified Design: The AP1000 has fewer components than earlier designs, which reduces the potential for mechanical failure and simplifies maintenance. For example, it uses natural circulation and gravity-driven safety systems that reduce the need for mechanical pumps and other moving parts. Improved Efficiency: The AP1000 is designed to produce more electrical power (about 1100 megawatts electric) compared to many older PWRs. It also features improved thermal efficiency! Construction Time and Cost: The design of the AP1000 aims to reduce both construction costs and times through modular construction techniques. Components of the reactor are built in sections off-site and assembled on-site. Licensing and Deployment: The design has been approved in multiple countries, and its standardized design is intended to bring with it the benefits of economy of scale through mass production.
