This one is for the teachers. #backtoschool post 2/2. With back to school in full swing, let’s give it up for teachers! A good education can change anyone. But more importantly, a good teacher can change everything. I am the product of the California public school system and now a parent with kids in the same system. I admire what our teachers do and why they do it. It is not an easy job and the salaries are low—especially relative to the impact teachers have on our communities. “Despite the importance of their jobs, teachers sometimes get the short end of the stick when it comes to pay. Although the average annual wage for teachers is $68,373, compared with the average annual wage of $61,900 for all other U.S. occupations, teacher pay varies widely from state to state.” Yahoo! Finance, May 2024. Irish poet and 20th-century literature legend, W.B. Yeats said it best, “Education is not the filling of a pot but the lighting of a fire.” Teachers are the spark and the fire is our future. Cheers to our teachers. Let’s invest in them. This post from Evan Erdberg speaks volumes.
This isn't shocking to me but it's shocking that we are still allowing this to happen as a society...teachers deserve a livable wage no matter where they're located. We also need to think about sustainable cost effective models for schools that allow teachers to work from anywhere -- especially if they cannot afford to live in districts where the cost of housing is astronomically high. From the article: "Detroit stands out as the only major U.S. city where teachers can afford to live comfortably on their salaries. This is a stark contrast to places like San Francisco, where a teacher's salary hardly covers shared housing." In Detroit, with a starting salary of $38,500 😱 teachers can afford homes priced well above the median, highlighting a sustainable balance between earnings and living costs. This affordability is critical, not just for housing but for a teacher's overall quality of life, enabling them to enjoy simple pleasures and partake in meaningful life events without financial strain. As we push for educational excellence, let's also champion for the welfare of our teachers, who are foundational to our children's future. #EducationReform #TeacherSupport #AffordableLiving https://lnkd.in/eMVAy7GN

Bridget Phillipson's initiative to recruit 6,500 new teachers is a positive step, but it's crucial to address the underlying issues facing our current teachers. The focus shouldn't solely be on recruitment; we need to prioritise the workload, additional responsibilities, and work-life balance of our existing teachers. Overburdened and stressed teachers can't effectively shape young minds, no matter how many new recruits join the profession. Ensuring the wellbeing of our teachers will not only retain our current workforce but also make the profession more attractive to new candidates. We must create an environment where teachers can thrive and do what they do best – teach. #Education #TeacherWellbeing #WorkLifeBalance #TeacherRecruitment #WorkLifeBalance

It's true that many teachers in the United States face challenges related to low pay, especially compared to other professions requiring similar levels of education and responsibility. Teacher salaries can vary widely by state, district, and even school, with some states offering significantly higher pay than others. In many regions, especially in rural areas or states with lower overall cost of living, teacher salaries can be quite low, making it difficult for educators to make ends meet, especially when considering the demands of the job and the costs of continuing education or certification requirements. Low pay can contribute to high turnover rates in the teaching profession, as well as difficulties in attracting and retaining qualified educators. Despite these challenges, many teachers remain dedicated to their work because of their passion for education and their commitment to their students. Efforts to increase teacher pay and improve working conditions are ongoing, with many advocating for reforms to ensure that teachers are compensated fairly for the critical role they play in society.

👩🏫 Feeling the pinch or just hanging in there? As we approach the end of July, the uncertainty surrounding teacher pay for 2024 continues. Many teachers are heading into their summer break without clarity on what their salaries will be next year. This has left school leaders scrambling to set budgets based on estimates. The government, however, assures us that an announcement is imminent. The process typically involves the School Teachers' Review Body (STRB) making recommendations after consultations and evidence submissions. Ideally, a decision should be made by July, but delays have thrown schools into budgetary chaos. Current rumours suggest a 5.5% pay rise might be in the offing, though this exceeds what many schools have budgeted for. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson and Chancellor Rachel Reeves promise a decision by the end of the month. Meanwhile, schools and teachers remain in limbo. 🌟 Let's hope for a swift resolution that recognises the vital role our educators play. What are your thoughts on the delay? The new education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, has launched a campaign to hire 6,500 teachers, showing Labour's commitment to prioritising education. We believe this move is a chance for Labour to demonstrate their dedication to improving education. It will be important to see how they plan to recruit and keep teachers, especially in light of current challenges. Adequate funding will be crucial. How do you think they should address teacher recruitment and retention? 🍎📚 Did you know? The National Education Association revealed that the average teacher salary for the 2022-23 school year reached $68,469, signifying a 2.6% increase from the previous year. Yet, considering inflation, teachers found themselves earning $3,644 less than they did a decade ago. 📉 This stark decline in real wages underscores the persistent issue of inadequate compensation for our dedicated educators. It's time for policy changes to ensure fair pay for our teachers! 💪🏫 #EducationMatters #TeacherPay #SupportTeachers

3moComing from a Chicago public school I love this mission to help the teachers who helped me succeed. I'd love to be part of the team, I recently applied to the User research role and it is a perfect fit for someone who advocated for both teachers and student body.
