Negligent building owners beware, NYC is taking legal action! This week, NYC filed a lawsuit against the owners of several buildings (knowns as the Windermere) in Hell’s Kitchen over hundreds of code violations for unsafe façade conditions and a 14-year-old sidewalk shed. The Windermere should be considered an architectural treasure for our city and #HellsKitchen, but unfortunately the owners have allowed the property to fall into deep disrepair and have kept the building shrouded behind a sidewalk shed and fence for years! Property owners need to understand that DOB is no longer tolerating when they put off critical building repairs and allow long-standing sidewalk sheds to detract from the livability of our city. It was time for the DOB to take action. 14 years? Really? And no one ever thought about it? Landlord negligence Slow agency = tragedy or the perfect formula for disaster.

I’ve been living in that neighborhood for almost 20 years now. I walk past that building for years and always admired it beauty and obviouse historical value. I’ve been waiting for the building to be completed in hopes of moving there some day, but only saw minor changes done to it over the past two decades. It a shame. I think it’s great that DOB is finally taking action on this building, hopefully it will move the needle far enough to finally finish this landmark.
