Diverse, remote teams (the author is clearly in that business and kudos for getting Ad Age to publish the op-ed), sure. Wonderful in theory. Headline of the op-ed somewhat mis-characterizes the piece though... Gonna go out on a limb here... Disagree with the headline VEHEMENTLY.
In my conversations even with other agency employees and owners, the junior folks on agency teams have nearly unanimously expressed that they learn more and faster in F2F from their supervisors. This is particularly true in creative, account and strategy. Plus going out with colleagues after work is something that bonds teams together.
In my role running the eMarketing Association I talk to folks outside Didit.com too. There is also a real-or-imagined POV the junior team members have that F2F employees are more likely to get promotions and raises. I got that sense from folks at events, so perhaps people who like F2F contact, so, not a scientific survey.
PREDICTION: I anticipate that companies that prefer remote workers will get those and companies (including agencies) which prefer F2F workers will get those. Two different models with some overlap.
If I'm leading a strategic and creative pitch and I want to win the business... I can tell you which team I want to lead LOL. That team will be made up largely of folks in the same conference room. Does that mean they are in the office 5-days a week? NOPE. Will some be remote? Yes.
I'll be running my agency in a way that prioritizes both the client work and the ability of the junior staff to progress in their careers.
You can start throwing the rotten virtual fruit at me now. 🤣
