Happy Earth Day everyone 🤘 🌍. This past Saturday we were out in San Lorenzo at the San Lorenzo Village Homes Assn Earth Day event. Lots of people stopped to learn more about us, make food donations, as well as financial donations. We gave out information about food labeling and what it means. Food waste is a huge issue in the United States. Tons of eatable food ends up in the landfills due to not understanding the dates on products. You can learn more about what dates REALLY mean from the USDA https://lnkd.in/gKCyN536 Help reduce food waste at an individual level and help the planet... 💭 Per the EPA...did you know that "One-third of all food in the United States goes uneaten. EPA estimates that in 2019, about 96 percent of households' wasted food ended up in landfills, combustion facilities, or down the drain to the sewer system." 🥕 Read more about Preventing Wasted Food at Home https://lnkd.in/gYWcUrEP Food Recovery at a corporate level... 🔭 We are looking for food recovery partners to support our mission. Food is fundamental. That's why on this #WorldFoodDay, just as on all other days around the year, we work in the US and worldwide to improve access to food through legal and policy reform. Our Global Food Donation Policy Atlas project with The Global FoodBanking Network does this by advancing laws and policies that address food loss, waste, and hunger. Celebrate impact! In 2023, we expanded our Lakeshore Food Rescue program to end food waste, fight hunger, and mobilize community. Through a growing team, a bigger fleet of vehicles, and enhanced technology to mobilize volunteers, LFR rescued over 2 million pounds of food this year! That’s a 67% increase from 2022 - a huge increase thanks to a community that believes in building a stronger, healthier community. Inflation has slowed, but grocery costs continue to rise. More and more families face tradeoff decisions that have long term consequences on health and happiness. In 2024, we’re continuing to grow the Lakeshore Food Rescue network - with new partners, donors, and volunteers - to make sure that good food ends up with families, not landfills. Today we are launching our manifesto ahead of the General Election, calling on the next Government to commit to delivering more surplus food to those in need. Titled “Where’s the Food? Strengthening Communities Through Surplus Food Redistribution”, the manifesto lays out measures to incentivise businesses to redistribute more of their surplus, proposals to support the redistribution sector and strengthen communities in the process, and a plan for a wider food system reset. We are calling for: 💚 Subsidies for farmers to cover redistribution costs 💚 Tax benefits for businesses donating surplus food 💚 Mandatory food waste reporting 💚 Clear guidelines for ‘good samaritans’ on food donation safety 💚 Sustained funding for farm level food redistribution 💚 A UK-wide plan to end charitable food aid 💚 Resources for local food waste and food security projects By working together, government, the third sector, and industry can overcome the challenges to redistributing surplus – and ensure more food reaches the people who need it. At FareShare North East we're supporting FareShare UK as they launch their manifesto ahead of the General Election, asking "Where's The Food?" This is particularly relevant for us at FareShare North East as we're running out of food - even though millions of tonnes of good to eat surplus food are still going to waste in the UK The manifesto sets out a clear plan to remove barriers to food redistribution and help us to work together with the government, industry, and the third sector to ensure we feed people first Just as important, the manifesto also calls for a UK-wide plan to end the need for emergency food aid - it is unacceptable in a country as wealthy as the UK, nor is it a lasting solution to food insecurity Read more & show your support here - https://lnkd.in/eRT7vCgp
