Did you know that in 2020, 20% of Science and Engineering doctoral degrees went to graduates with some community college experience? Or that 80% of community college students want to earn a baccalaureate degree but only 16% actually do, within 6 years (according to the CCRC)? What would our nation's STEM workforce look like if the transfer process was more seamless? On May 20th, come join the National Academies on Science, Engineering and Medicine Roundtable on Systemic Change in Undergraduate STEM Education as we discuss the barriers and opportunities facing STEM Undergraduate students. https://lnkd.in/ghKbzmWc
Join the Roundtable on Systemic Change in Undergraduate STEM Education on May 20 for engaging panel discussions reflecting on our 2016 consensus report, Barriers and Opportunities for 2-Year and 4-Year STEM Degrees. In a recent article by Sunaina Kumar, she emphasized a commonplace phenomenon regarding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. "The underrepresentation of women in STEM in every region of the world, and a peculiar global trend about the participation of women is that even though graduation rates are higher among women than men, women are less likely to undertake studies in STEM fields, particularly engineering, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and physics." The compromised involvement and participation of women in undertaking STEM research is a telling story about negative conditioning surrounding the sciences for women. Furthermore, it could negatively impact the overall participation of minorities in STEM subjects. As a social science researcher, my experiences in STEM-based subjects are anecdotal and perhaps not as astute as those of a STEM researcher. However, as a woman, I am thoroughly convinced, and a bit indignant, that I was guided away from real opportunities in the sciences owing to the lack of a "scientific" rigor. Proper and meaningful guidance takes time and dedicated effort. To anyone interested in shaping the future participation of women and minorities in STEM research, please share this opportunity with your colleagues, friends, and family.
