I networked my way to my dream job in 2019! How did I stand out compared to 1,000 applicants? Here was my networking approach: - Attended a career fair and talked to recruiters my junior year. - Reached out to other Toyota/Lexus associates. - Went on a marketing expedition and visited Toyota in person. - Met in person multiple different Toyota employees and connected with them on LinkedIn. - Had professors talk me up to the people over hiring. - Sent a connection request to the recruiter after meeting him. - Followed up by saying it was great to meet you. It wasn't my resume that got me in. It wasn't my cover letter. It wasn't my interview skills. It was my NETWORKING efforts that offered the opportunity! You can't want to work at a big company. This statement deserves a shoutout. For companies hiring in the midst of laying off employees, what gives? Did you hold an internal job fair to see if any of the impacted employees could fulfill your existing job openings? Could you have cross-trained them in a different department that has vacancies? Don't you want someone that knows your internal systems, processes, and overall workflow to be considered for those open positions? If your company is big enough to continue to be hiring, while firing, your company should have an internal HR or Recruiting team that specifically focuses on reallocating employees from departments that are laying off. 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻: 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 Creative Way for Women to Prove they Can Do the Job Recently I conducted a national survey of women automotive technicians, and discovered this interesting challenge: 𝘈 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘧 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 were asked if they could do heavy lifting during their interviews. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱? In the WomenTech Automotive Job Placement Training I recently conducted for a Community College in the Northeast, I taught several ways for women to respond to this question to demonstrate to a prospective employer that they’re able to meet the physical requirements of the position. The one that the group was most excited about? My suggestion that female students create an Instagram account and post a reel of them in a task that shows them doing heavy lifting. This way, during the interview they can just show the reel and let their actions do the talking. And guess what? The college and instructors liked this idea so much they made it a class assignment for ALL their students. That’s just one of the many practical building blocks that went into the WomenTech Job Placement Plan the school created during the training. 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 – 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 – 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀? Before I help them, many college programs tell me their female students are 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸𝘴.
