Engaging discussion that culminated in four key actions needed for the Latin American and Caribbean region: (1) more commercial freedom, (2) more policy coherence, (3) greater government-industry collaboration, and a (4) friendlier doing business environment that support new entrants such as Low Cost Carriers. I’ve been in Italy this week with more than 50 of our senior leaders, and I’m posting this onboard one of Italo’s high speed trains from Rome down to Naples. This is my favourite way to work – amazing views out the window, great onboard facilities, and travelling hundreds of miles quickly and sustainably. But why are we in a situation where Italo, the Open Access service which is challenging incumbent operator Trenitalia, has captured 40% of Italy’s long-distance market – yet in the UK long-distance Open Access operators only have 3% market share? Competition creates value and choice for customers, and it keeps all businesses on their toes (both Trenitalia & Italo offer excellent products & services) and this competitive dynamic grows rail in totality. Just look at how Lumo and LNER compete on the London-Edinburgh market, bringing the best out of each other and building rail’s modal share on the route from one-third to more than one-half. The only losers from that competition have been airlines. I started the week making these points to the Rail Minister and fellow industry leaders at an Open Access summit organised by Rail Partners. Creating more choice and lower prices is a truly customer-first approach to railways, so we need bold action to unlock more competition in UK rail. And we need to start getting on with it right now.

Newark Liberty International Airport hits another milestone! The latest stage of its impressive $2.7bn Terminal A development is now open, featuring six new retail and F&B outlets, and seven additional gates. The new terminal has been operational since earlier this year, with 21 gates already in use. And guess what? Last week's grand unveiling added seven more gates to the mix! Over the next two months, Delta Airline will be transitioning to the new terminal, and the final five gates will be up and running. Have you experienced the new Terminal A yet? European airlines continue to expand their partnerships with rail operators for ground connections. Swiss International Air Lines is extending its air-rail partnership with SBB CFF FFS to cover trains between the Genena Airport and Lausanne, Fribourg or Bern. Swiss and SBB's partnership allows travelers to book connections on a single ticket. These partnerships aim to replace flights (and reduce emissions) in some places — like Amsterdam to Brussels — but in this case it simply makes the connection easier by allowing fliers to book a single ticket. 2023 rankings of world's busiest airports have been released by our sister organisation ACI World - Airports Council International. 🌍 Six European hubs top the list in terms of international passengers served, including London-Heathrow, Amsterdam (Royal Schiphol Group), Paris-CDG (Groupe ADP), İGA İstanbul Airport, Frankfurt (Fraport AG) and Madrid (Aena). The important progress achieved in 2023 nudged global air connectivity closer to full recovery. While airports spared no effort to turn the corner on COVID, all but one (IST) major European airports still posted traffic results below 2019 levels. 🔴 The European Commission welcomes continued airline competition on the routes from Amsterdam to the US ✈ This, following the positive developments at Amsterdam airport enabling new entrant JetBlue Airways Corporation to continue operating at the airport over the IATA Summer 2024 Season ✔ 🔍 The Commission monitored the evolution of the market conditions at Amsterdam airport. Specifically, this concerned the degree of congestion of the airport and the operations of the Blue Skies joint venture between Air France-KLM Group, Delta and Virgin Atlantic, to identify any risk of serious and irreparable damage to competition for transatlantic traffic, in particular on the Amsterdam-New York route. 📜 The Commission stood ready to intervene with interim measures in case JetBlue did not secure appropriate access to Amsterdam airport for the IATA Summer 2024 Season. JetBlue has now improved its slot portfolio at Amsterdam airport. As a result, consumers will not be deprived of choice at a time of strong demand for transatlantic services 🤝 📅 The Commission will continue its monitoring ahead of the IATA Summer 2025 Season.
