Last Thursday, we had our very first Verve Ventures Climate Portfolio Day in Zurich ♻ . In attendance were startups, investors and industry experts active in this space. The event brought together several of Verve's climate tech portfolio companies. In attendance were neustark, Bcomp Ltd, Turn2X and tozero. Carbon13 announce new investment into 21 Climate Tech startups 👏🏽 From repurposing construction and manufacturing waste into low carbon building materials (Reaforma); to operating systems for carbon border taxes (Cbamboo); and reducing the climate’s most potent greenhouse gases through predictive monitoring and detection of fluorinated gases (Climate-i) ⭐

Big news for the Carbon13 team today. We are thrilled to announce the first close of our new #climate fund. The fund is targeted to be €30m. With the first close, we have invested in 19 amazing #climatetech teams, 6 of which are from our first venture builder programme in Germany and the rest from the UK programmes. When the fund reaches the target, our portfolio will be working towards the aim of abating 1% of global GHG emissions. This is a huge step forward for us and shows the scale of our ambition. We’ve put together a truly amazing team under our new CEO Nicky Dee, who are all working towards making this a reality!  🌊 Over the last 2 years, we have received 1000s of applications to our programmes, selected over 500 founders to join and cofounded over 150 startups with them. 💥 Across all funds, Carbon13 has now invested into 64 startups, each with the potential to mitigate global CO2e by 10m tonnes per year when at scale. 💪 64% of the teams have at least one female co-founder. 🌳 These investments mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Carbon13 as we begin further international expansion in Europe.   And for more detail, see our blog post here: https://lnkd.in/e_sqhwMK #climatechange #greentech #netzero #startups #greenfuture

A repeatable process for building startups is critical to the #venturestudio model, and is one of the key elements that distinguishes it from traditional venture. Clear stage gates ensure that the process is followed and that startups are assessed consistently and objectively. The stage gates also help ensure that the amount of capital committed scales with the level of conviction, at a fine-grained level. It’s also important that the process is as efficient as possible and that there is continual improvement (kaizen). We use a 4 stage process. Stage 2 is our research and discovery stage. This data shows that, over the course of the current cohort of startups, the Platform Venture Studio team has been consistently reducing the time between signing a Founder-in-Residence up and making a go/no go decision to proceed to Stage 3.
