Potentially an unpopular opinion: The job advert that sparked a debate in the past few days on LinkedIn and triggered many marketing professionals… …although I understand where most of you are coming from (it seems like a lot of responsibilities for one person), working with Ben building his own personal brand (not Gymshark’s Ben’s!!) is a wonderful opportunity and will be a great achievement for someone out there. Someone who sees this as a dream job! We all have different expectations (both from an employer and an employee side) and that’s the beauty of it. You might think this job should require a whole team, while someone else thinks this job is everything they could ever wish for. A huge role it certainly is...personally, I think this role ad indicates the current issue within social media. We have an everything-for-nothing attitude to social media and digital in the UK that discredits the impact of creativity. Brands' and individuals' presence on social has the potential to be the single most impactful and recurring promotional/marketing investment they make. And the demand for brands to have their social curated and managed continues to grow at a rapid rate. But just because it's social media and not billboards, doesn't mean it's easy... In fact, it NEVER stops, so it's arguably harder. One role for a challenge this size shouldn't really encompass these 5 differing skill sets. This role (like many social media roles I see) is going to require its social media person they be: A photographer A videographer A producer / editor (likely to V high standard) A brand strategist A data analyst Operations/customer service Don't get me wrong, some of those skills 100% go together to form a cohesive digital marketing role. But I think (in the UK especially) we need to get real. Even in an AGENCY, those skills are split between roles, or at the very least are achieved within teams. Don't try to cram all your marketing under one umbrella to spend the absolute minimum, yet expect an impressive impact and ROI. I believe this role will require an extended creative team at their disposal, certainly an assistant to some degree, or an agency that can cover all the bases. We need to start seeing and crediting social media investment the same way we see advertising investment, and in the UK we need to start embracing advertising investment full stop 😂

Please stop telling Social Media professionals their job isn't hard. You are discrediting the work of a lot of individuals. Social media is more than just posting. It takes strategy, trial and error, being able to adapt constantly to new social media changes, and a special level of creativity. (There is a lot more but, I don't want to be here all day) Social media professionals are passionate about Social Media Management/Marketing, community and being a creative. Don’t be one of those people who discredits someone’s passion or career. The amazing social media campaigns and brands you see daily killing it on socials don’t create themselves. It’s months of work, failures, reworking strategies, moving deadlines around, content creation, collaborating with other departments, community & crisis management, late nights, etc. We are marketing professionals and should be seen as such. Also, if it was so easy everyone would do it.

Coldsmoke Creative is hiring for a Project Manager role! We’re excited to expand our team. 2024 is off to an exciting start, and our pipeline has never been more full of amazing projects. The link to the job description will be in the first comment below. But before we get to that, I want to share what I have been seeing from applications during the process so far. I just spent 1.5 hours going through about 70 applications. This means each application receives about 90 seconds of attention! Is that reckless? Maybe. Are we going to potentially miss out on an amazing candidate by moving that quickly? Perhaps. But most of the applications make it easy to make a decision even quicker. Here are a few key tips I'm offering based on the 70 applications I just reviewed: ❌ Don’t have lazy typos anywhere in the application (inconsistent capitalization, spacing, spelling, etc.). (This one may be obvious but the number of typos I've seen has been alarmingly high). ❌ Don’t apply to us (Coldsmoke) and state that you aspire to join “Prince William County Office” as a key contributor. ❌ Don’t say “Things never go my way” in your cover letter ❌ Don’t make “I love building people” your entire cover letter ❌ Don’t put your GPA on your resume, probably ever (who cares), but especially if it won’t “wow” someone ❌ Don’t attach your resume as a Word doc 💭 If your resume or LinkedIn doesn’t make it very obvious that you have relevant experience, address that in your cover letter. Make it easy for us to extrapolate that QUICKLY in our review. ✅ Have a completed LinkedIn profile. Fill it out with your work history (with company logos if possible - i.e., make sure you’ve selected the proper LinkedIn Company profile when entering your job history) and have bullet points with what you worked on. ✅ Have a professional picture/headshot on your LinkedIn profile and make it visible for all connection levels. Get feedback from friends, or use a service like https://lnkd.in/e4AMJrT2 to get feedback on your picture. ✅ Test your LinkedIn URL to make sure it works. Many are entering the LinkedIn URL without the "/in/" before the profile name. Test it! ✅ Your LinkedIn profile and resume should tell the same story. Tailoring a resume for a specific role is probably fine, but dates for employment at previous roles should not differ wildly (or at all?) between the two. Creates more questions than answers. ✅ Above all else: *Do* say you’ve been following me on LinkedIn for a year and call my leadership “visionary” :).
