We had the chance to meet Wahida Omary, a software developer for the Tanzania Medical Stores Department, during a FHIR training in Arusha last month. Women currently account for only ~21% of all developers in Africa, but that is changing. At the training, Wahida shared some advice for other women considering a career in #digitalhealth. #tekgrant KNUST app to enhance healthcare accessibility of underserved communities Disease outbreaks in remote areas of Ghana are most often reported late or underreported due to lack of avenues to channel these reports to inform relevant national intervention. The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is working on a mobile application which makes it easy for underserved communities to access healthcare. The mobile application which is being developed under the MESTI #mHealth Project can operate with or without internet. It has two sections: A part for ordinary Ghanaians and a place for medical personnel. The app would be used to gather data on disease symptoms which will then be analysed by the medical personnel for swift mediation. To address language barriers, the app is equipped with language translation features. Beyond this, users can seek virtual consultation and emergency care among others. The app, jointly developed by KNUST Colleges of Health Sciences and Science is funded by (International Development Research Centre (IDRC)- through the Ministry of Environment Science and Technology (MESTI) and Science Granting Councils Initiative in Sub-Saharan Africa (SGC IOSRS). At a stakeholder consultation, Principal Investigator of the project, Rose-Mary Owusuaa Mensah Gyening, PhD said the initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3. “If we achieve goal 3, it’ll definitely trickle down to the other goals. We want to ensure a healthy life for all especially marginalized communities." Co-Investigator, Emmanuel Ahene (Ph.D) added: “In almost every region in Ghana, you’d realise that there are people who have limited access to healthcare and they are our target.” KNUST vice-chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson charged the scientists to partner other colleges to give the project a sociological touch.

We are excited to share an update from WAYDS Tanzania, where our Founder and Executive Director, Charles Deogratius, recently had the opportunity to engage with the community through Jambo Radio (@Jambo FM) in Shinyanga, Tanzania. The aim was to shed light on the abundant youth opportunities present in our communities. During the interview, Charles emphasized a crucial point: as youth, we often narrow our scope when it comes to identifying opportunities. Many of us focus solely on seeking employment or waiting for someone else to reveal opportunities to us. However, we must shift our perspective and recognize that every challenge we face in our communities presents an opportunity for growth and innovation. "We are living in the community, and every day, we witness various challenges. It is high time we start viewing these challenges as opportunities to find solutions," remarked Charles Deogratius. By embracing the concept that "opportunity is someone's challenge," we can begin to identify and address the needs of our communities effectively. Instead of solely consuming products and services, we can become the inventors and problem-solvers, catering to the demands of our community. We believe that our communities are resilient and brimming with potential. As youth, it is our time to harness our skills, knowledge, and creativity to build solutions for the challenges our communities face. Together, we can empower ourselves and contribute to not only finding employment but also creating employment opportunities for others. By doing so, we foster a robust ecosystem that nurtures #entrepreneurship, #innovation, and #sustainable growth. Stay tuned for more updates from WAYDS Tanzania as we continue to promote youth opportunities and community development. Let's unlock our potential and make a difference! #YouthOpportunities #CommunityDevelopment #Empowerment #SolutionMakers #Jamboproducts #YALI #Nikonekt Mandela Washington Fellowship YALI Network YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa IREX USAID International Labour Organization Ministry of Finance-Tanzania
