As I look back on my career journey, I lean into gratitude. Gratitude is defined as the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. The journey thus far has been a windy road and in this I give deep thanks to each step along my path: ♥ PathCare Academy: The igniting of my love for biology & science. ♥ PathCare: My first full-time employment who gave me opportunity to show I can make a difference in people’s lives. ♥ Cape Peninsula University of Technology: Challenging myself to be more if I set my mind to it. ♥ Unistel Medical Laboratories: Changing my perspective that my only limitation is myself. ♥ Roche: Discovering that I have so much more to give. ♥ Mukuru: Unleashing the possibility. How do you track the ebbs and flows of your life progress? Last year, my Community-Campus Partnerships for Health colleagues and I facilitated groups of clinicians to draw their river of life, inspired by Engage for Equity’s River of Life activity, which is a reflective tool that helps you describe the history of your community-engaged partnership and/or project. Drawing your river of life helps you see how the river journey has shaped where you are now. The purpose is to see where you’ve been so you can make intentional decisions about where you want to go. My river of life traces my journey through the obstacles that nearly depleted my reserves—the 2008 recession, my PhD program, leaving academia—and the experiences that made me feel connected again—mentors, friends, new experiences. Reflecting on your positionality, especially in different modes, is helpful for creating a path forward so you can see what barriers make it difficult to keep the waters flowing and what facilitators inspire a new iteration of you. I hope to keep discovering new iterations of myself with the support of mentors, friends, and new experiences.

Acknowledging the need for better public understanding of the connections between the health of people, places, and the planet, we added Media Fellows to our Scholars and Fellows program in 2023. Nova’s Media Fellowship program aims to increase the number and quality of print and online articles as well as broadcasts that reflect a broad vision of health, are science-based, and accurately report on pertinent ideas, questions, and debates. We embrace solutions journalism while also seeking to combat mis- and dis-information, which have become a scourge in health and science communications. As #firstgenerationcollegestudents it is crucial to build upon their social capital (network) to learn technical skills while fueling the passion for a fulfilling career. When I was a FGCS, I found myself substituting in schools to practice pedagogy and strengthen my teaching presence. Before I finished student teaching I had 3 job offers! My research #CriticalCollegePersistence Model shows educational institutions what authentic experiences #FGCS and how their collaboration enhances the students’ P-20 educational experience.
