National Guide Dog Month is here to raise awareness about the life-changing help that guide dogs can give to blind and disabled people, while also seeking to raise funds to help supply guide dogs to everyone who needs them. Raising awareness for National Guide Dog Awareness Month can mean sharing the excitement by learning some interesting facts to pass on to friends, family, and coworkers. ______________ -The first guide dog after WWI was issued to a blinded veteran in 1916. -It takes around 18 months for a guide dog to fully complete their training and be ready for service. -Some of the most popular breeds for guide dogs are Golden Retriever, Labrador, German Shepherd, and Labrador Retriever. -The career of a guide dog is only 7-10 years, which means there is a constant need for new guide dogs to be trained for service. Storyteller at Better Story: I craft words that work for the benefit of people and planet. Author / Coach for writers and creatives.
The first day I volunteered at my local animal shelter, I didn't enjoy it. I happened to arrive at a busy time, there was no one to show me around, and if you've ever heard the sound of 80 dogs barking, you'll know it can feel intense! I went to help. I wanted to be useful, but as I stood there with people and dogs milling around me, I didn't know how. A more confident person might have grabbed a lead and got stuck in. I'm quite shy in new situations, so I went and hid in the cat house. Much more civilised ๐ Luckily, a lovely and experienced volunteer found me and asked if I wanted a tour. He introduced me to every dog, told me about the rules and routines, and went on my first walk with me. After that, all was well (I now go 4-5 times a week to help out and walk dogs like the gorgeous Glenda pictured above). The shelter is a tiny, under-resourced charity, they need volunteers to function. It's completely understandable that they don't have time for a formal induction. But... how how could they make sure everyone who walks through the gate with the intention to help feels able to? That's something I'm helping them with at the moment: - what to expect when you arrive - setting up a buddy system with a more experienced volunteer - having rules and routines clearly displayed - adding a few words under each animals' name to describe them Volunteers Week is coming up (3-9 June), and if you're planning to recruit new volunteers, you might want to think about how you'll set expectations and welcome people before you design your advert. So, here's a link (in comments) to a useful Better Story blog about just that๐ #Volunteering #VolunteersWeek #CharityComms #AnimalLovers [Imageย description: Glenda the dog. A medium sized, black, brown and white ex-hunting dog stands happily in long grass looking at the camera. Backdrop of mountains and blue sky.]ย

Puppy Mill Awareness Day sheds light on the importance of adopting dogs instead of shopping at pet stores (which are often sourced by puppy mills). We must protect beloved animals by ending the cruel conditions that take place in puppy mills. Here are a few ways you can help: ๐พ Adopt a pet and spread the word to encourage others to do the same. ๐พ Spread awareness regarding puppy mills and the number of dog's lives lost due to neglect. ๐พ Help collect funds to support organizations working to end the puppy mill industry, and organizations taking care of homeless dogs. Itโs not always easy, but itโs always worth it ๐ค Being a dog rescue does not mean cuddling cute puppies all day (although there are times for that)! Thereโs a lot that goes into saving lives behind the scene that often take months-a year of planning to save each life. Our team is human and we will never get used to seeing dogs go through tough times. Ongoing support from you all truly makes all the difference in the world for dogs, and for us. Help dog rescues whenever you can. There is something everyone can do! How you can help: -Set up a monthly donation (link in bio) -Donate kibble. This is a never ending need! (Amazon wishlist in bio) -Foster! We need at least 20 short term and long term fosters currently to help current dogs and local surrenders who need help (apply on our site) -Volunteer your time (we always need drivers, supply hubs, administrators, and photographers) -Share our content! Getting the word out about dogs in need of fosters and adopters does work! #dogrescue #torontodogs #redemptionpaws #adoptme #fosterme #adoptdontshop

Light Bulb #2. This Light Bulb is especially important to me.ย I turn it on (make contact) when Iโm frustrated, need to securely express my frustration, or share my excitement at progress.ย ย I will be heard โฆ not criticized .. and the information will always be confidential.ย In animal rescue, the words are โconfidentialโ and โprofessionalโ. I started my career as an employment/outplacement consultant.ย It was the season of merger/acquisitionโฆ moving divisions overseas to save money (more on that subject at a later time), and loss of job security.ย I needed an emotional outlet and found it in a Bopper Bag โฆ sand filled toy for children - - it worked for adults as well, especially when youโre short.ย At the end of the day, I could come home โ hit the Bopperย ย - who bounced right back, never talked back and never, ever, repeated the words he heard.ย See my last post re:ย tax-exempt business. In the early days at PAAS, we were moving forward at what seemed like warp speed โ out-of-state transport!!ย It was important that someone from one of the big supporters visit us.ย It was a cold, miserable night after a long day, and when I reached out to he agreed to visit the shelter. Our facilities manager gave him the gold star treatment.ย Since then, heโs listened, provided invaluable feedback and, many times, said nothing!! We all need that โsomeoneโ who listensโฆ.gives advice when appropriateโฆsays nothing when itโs the right thing to do. This light bulb only stays โonโ as long as the connection isnโt broken.ย For me, luckily, that โsomeoneโ and I are still connected.ย Everyone needs connections especially in the world of animal rescue.ย The animals depend on us to save them and it takes connections.ย If you donโt have a team (even one or two), I strongly suggest you find the right people.ย The foundation is trust. #animalrescue #nonprofit #lightbulb #connection #friend #trust #dogs #cats #people

Beyond Spreadsheets and Strategies ๐พ As a management student, I was used to focusing only on numbers and strategies in business. But one day, the sight of a stray dog on the street stirred something within me. It reminded me of my own beloved puppy, and I felt a surge of compassion for this forgotten creature. Determined to help, I sought out a foundation dedicated to supporting stray animals. My search led me to Pawzz Foundation ๐ถ, an organization providing food and veterinary care for these vulnerable creatures. With a sense of purpose, I decided to utilize my digital marketing skills to raise funds for Pawzz. Through social media campaigns and targeted outreach, I managed to garner significant support, enabling Pawzz to continue its vital work. The experience taught me a profound lesson: compassion and empathy are not mere emotions; they are potent forces for positive change. As management students, we possess the tools to make a real difference in the world. Our skills extend beyond business strategies; they encompass the power to uplift individuals, animals, and our planet. Together, let us embrace compassion and empathy, bridging the gap between our worlds and theirs, one paw at a time. #animalwelfare #managementstudies #digitalamarketing #giveback
