EPSCO meeting of Health Ministers under the Belgian Presidency with a great deal of Health topics were I took part in the delegation of the Portuguese Minsiter of Health, Ana Paula Martins.  💊 The main theme of the meeting was the debate on the so-called “pharmaceutical package”, from which guidelines were issued for the continuation of the discussion of legislative proposals.   There is consensus around the incentive modulation model, and on objective criteria that make it possible to respond to unmet medical needs.   Portugal and Spain defended a commitment to a base protection period of seven years, close to the European Parliament's position and as a way of promoting, in a balanced way, access to innovation, but also to generic and biosimilar medicines.   Topics such as the approval of the Council Conclusions on the future of the European Health Union, the area of medicine shortages, among others, were also discussed. Minister Ana Paula Martins requested that the Commission adequately evaluate all forms of support for investment in medicines, including at European level, to ensure balanced competition between Member States in productive activity and equitable access to essential medicines. https://lnkd.in/gE6gEJBF.   https://lnkd.in/gzh-DwnW

National Competent Authorities, including INFARMED, I.P. have endorsed a consensus statement on the status of the EU regulatory framework for medical devices. Pharmacokinetics doesn't have to be an insurmountable challenge 🤯 I admit that during my college years, the Pharmacokinetics course didn't resonate with me—truthfully, it even traumatized me. That's why I was surprised to find myself captivated by a recent presentation on pharmacovigilance and pharmacokinetics 🤓 In a dynamic and straightforward presentation, Betânia Abreu Faria illustrated how her dual expertise—as a hospital pharmacist specializing in pharmacokinetics and as a pharmacovigilance professional—intersects and complements each other to ensure patient safety 🙌 Pharmacovigilance is not merely a reactive science; it is, and should be, proactive, aiming to minimize adverse drug reactions and their impact. In this mission, pharmacokinetics is an invaluable ally 💜

Our mission as Gilead Sciences is to discover, develop and make innovative medicines available to patients with life-threatening diseases in the Netherlands and worldwide. Unfortunately, after EMA approval it currently takes an additional 600 days on average before a treatment becomes available to patients in the Netherlands. If it becomes available at all. The “Lock” exists for new treatments that have a higher cost per patient or involve significant costs on an annual basis due to the higher amount of patients that need them. Through the lock, the government works to ensure that innovative treatments are ultimately made accessible to patients in an affordable way and that the financial risks are limited in the process. The criteria for deploying the lock are set out in policy. When the Lock is applied by the Minister of Health, a new treatment is excluded from reimbursement for all patients. In practice, the Minister lifts the lock only after a positive assessment by the Dutch Health Care Institute and after successful negotiations with the minister. During this time drug is in the lock, a new treatment is not reimbursed through health insurance for patients. Gilead is making every effort to ensure a timely conclusion to the evaluation and negotiation processes. By now it is clear that the Dutch system of the lock and key negotiations is longer and more stringent than comparable processes abroad. As a result, treatments become available to patients in the Netherlands and added the insured basic package than in other countries. We too share this concern. All the messages concerning this topic over the past few days shows how dire and urgent the situation is in the Netherlands and how polarized the debate is. There is a need for a more transparent, flexible, fast and predictable access system. One with clear and objective criteria, clear timelines and with an eye for the patients concerned. To make new treatment more quickly and sustainably accessible in the Netherlands. We have talked to various stakeholders in recent weeks about the balance between affordability and availability, and we look forward to continuing this constructive dialogue. https://lnkd.in/epB5Svgf

In today’s multidisciplinary context, pharmacists play a pivotal role as healthcare providers, not only for outpatients but also for residents in care facilities.   The expansion of expertise and robotisation in individual medication preparation (PMI) for residents of nursing homes and care facilities has proven to be a game-changer. #Multipharma’s million€ investments in cutting-edge PMI production centers at Alleur and Sint-Pieters-Leeuw hereby demonstrate our forward-thinking approach in this field. But there’s more! The addition of more pharmacists (Pharmacien Coordinateur et Adviseur/Adviserend en Coordinerend Apotheker) in healthcare settings locally is a strategic and much needed move. Collaborating with medical team, pharmacists can discuss and fine-tune medication regimens, ensuring optimal patient care. And here’s the twist: more pharmacists doesn’t mean a higher medication consumption. #Solidaris’ study reveals the opposite – increased pharmacist presence leads to reduced medication use. Kudos to #Multipharma for prioritizing personalized pharmaceutical advice and support for patients who need it most. After all, as a cooperative organization, we primarily think in the interests of the patient. With a network of 243 pharmacies and over 1,800 dedicated collaborators, Multipharma continues to champion accessible, high-quality care for a million patients.
