On October 25, 2023, Treaty One Nations announced the official results of the Treaty One Joint Reserve Land Code. This announcement marked the last of 4 votes needed to move ahead with the Naawi Oodena Urban Economic Development zone. Swan Lake Nation (vote 32, 2010) Brokenhead Ojibway Nation (Vote 51, 2014), and Long Plain First Nation (vote 75, 2017) had previously passed land codes but it was Peguis First Nation, Roseau River First Nation, Sandy Bay First Nation and Sakgeeng First Nation needed to pass their land codes. On October 24th Sakgeeng successfully passed with a successful 97.2% of ballots in favour of the land code for joint management of Naawi Oodena. We want to share the story of Naawi-Oodena for a number of reasons. 7 member nations jointly managing a large parcel of urban lands is a first-of-its-kind. The impressive est. 2 Billion dollar project will unfold over the next 15 years and will transform the former Kapyong Barracks site and enhance the city of Winnipeg. The Treaty One group will showcase modern Indigenous-led design and build a place for these 7 member nations to contribute to the local economy and steer their own future. Great day yesterday at the Wales Civil Contingencies Conference. My key takeaway points where: The importance of building effective working relationships in peacetime for use in response and recovery. The team delivered a good mix of presentations each with key points for colleagues to take away and action. In the interconnected world we live in resilience needs to be built in at every level.

Exciting news: we are now playing an even more active role in preserving the UK’s maritime heritage. We have joined forces with National Historic Ships UK (NHS-UK) in a new scheme that will safeguard the future of the 1,500 vessels on its National Register. Columbia Metals will offer a discount to owners and custodians of registered vessels for materials required in support of their maintenance and conservation. In a vessel owner survey carried out last year, NHS-UK determined that there was pressing need for support around maintenance costs, as well as mooring and operational fees, in order to preserve historic examples of the UK’s maritime heritage. The organisation has now partnered with several companies and institutions involved in the maritime sector to address the financial concerns that were raised. Columbia Metals has been building healthy relationships with marine engineers and shipbuilders for over 60 years and has developed a dedicated stock of naval engineering alloys. We are delighted to support this honourable endeavour in pursuit of our continued commitment to the sector. NHS-UK is a government-funded organisation dedicated to the maintenance and conservation of historic vessels. Its National Register lists 1,500 craft that are at least 50 years old, based in UK waters and more than 33ft in length overall. The organisation is sponsored by the Headley Trust, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The vessels listed on the National Register include barges, trawlers, lifeboats, tugs, ferries, fishing boats, shrimpers, steamers and schooners, amongst many others. #Antigua and #Barbuda play a major part in #caribbean navy and #seafaring history. Nelsons Dockyard (yes named after Horatio Nelson) in English Harbour naturally protects ships and cargo from hurricanes. In 1671 the first recorded ship to enter English Harbour was a yacht, the Dover Castle. It was chartered to the King by a Colonel Stroude for the use of the Governor. in 1704 Fort Berkeley was listed as one of twenty forts around the coast of Antigua. By 1707 naval ships used English Harbour as a station, but no facilities had yet been built for ship maintenance or repair. By 1723 English Harbour was in regular use by British naval ships and in September of that year the harbour gained a reputation as a safe natural harbour when a hurricane swept ashore 35 ships lying in other ports in Antigua, while HMS Hector and HMS Winchelsea both moored in English Harbour, suffered no damage! We can only imagine how horrific that was and what a revelation it was to realise how safe English Harbour was. Consequently In 1728 the first Dockyard, St. Helena, a capstan house for careening ships (that is to ground a vessel at high tide to expose the hull for repairs ), a stone storehouse, and three wooden sheds for the storage of careening gear. Naval operations in English Harbour soon outgrew the small original dockyard and plans were made to develop the western side of the harbour with more facilities. Today Antigua has a vibrant and bustling modern #port handling a plethora of cruise #ships for its burgeoning tourism (well why not with a beach for every day of the year !) not to mention the constant flow of goods arriving on island by #Airfreight and #Seafreight from around the world - supplying local people and business and making the Logistics of Island Living easy to manage #GlobalReachLocalFocus #EnglishHarbour #NelsonsDockyard #cargo #logistics #supplychain
