In an era where the future of nations depends on innovation, governments worldwide are faced with the challenge of crafting national policies for fostering innovation and enhancing science and higher education. Among the choices available, two distinct approaches have emerged, each with its own set of challenges and opportunities. Centres of Excellence (CoE) are designed to create a knowledge elite whose achievements radiate across the entire higher education system. CoEs result from focused policy and budgetary strategies, channeling funding and regulatory support to a select group of HEIs to advance national educational development and innovation. The rationale behind CoEs is grounded in two compelling arguments. Firstly, by concentrating on national status and innovation policy, they aim to bolster national statistics in innovation and science. This is achieved through advancements in STEM research, which can be technically demanding and costly. For countries with budget constraints or lower R&D spending, CoEs offer a means to pool resources for more impactful research outcomes. The focus on national rankings and status can outweigh disparities between local institutions, as long as the national champions deliver significant victories. Secondly, CoEs serve as focal points for national innovation, generating network effects for innovation and reform. Their superior facilities, equipment, competitive salaries, and selective admissions policies are expected to catalyze progress within their own institutions and the surrounding academic landscape. Introduction of Regional Development Initiatives, on the other hand, is rooted in a longer-term perspective, and aims to stimulate local growth by seeding innovation and development across diverse regions. These initiatives can be linked to broader regional development efforts, enhance performance in specific scientific fields, or embrace a combination of these strategies. In an era of urbanization and centralization, regional development initiatives strive to bring the advantages of innovation to all corners of a nation. For instance, a country seeking to improve its general health statistics might establish regional initiatives in partnership with medical centers and universities. Seed funding can enhance access to cutting-edge diagnostic and research technology, while nationally administered programs can bring in foreign expertise and tap into local talent from underserved populations. Although results may take longer to materialize compared to national CoEs, the benefits extend beyond innovation statistics to encompass critical societal goals like public health. Understanding the pros and cons of these contrasting approaches, and discussing how to benchmark national goals effectively is vital for policymakers across multiple sectors, not just Education. Public Servant, EdD Student & Volleyball Coach | Fonctionnaire, étudiante en DEd et coach de volleyball
PhD is not the only academic path after your Master's! When we think of doctoral degrees, we often think about the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). When I completed my Master of Arts in 2022, I had this inkling feeling that I wanted to continue my studies, but after doing some research (pun intended), I felt like getting a doctoral degree was so out of reach because they were too costly and time-consuming. I looked into doctoral degrees like Doctor of Medicine (MD), Naturopathic Doctor (ND), Juris Doctor (JD) and even the well-known Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). THEN...I found the lesser-known Doctor of Education (EdD). But, why would someone like me, who is not in education want to pursue an EdD? Well, I didn't necessarily wanted to do research; rather, I wanted to apply practical knowledge to my career at the Public Health Agency of Canada | Agence de la santé publique du Canada. A PhD is research-based and geared more towards those who want a career in academia or research, which was not the route I wanted. I'm so happy that my hours and days spent looking for programs across the world led me to the American College of Education's EdD in Public Health Education program. It provided me with the opportunity to pursue higher education while working full-time. The flexibility of the online program allows me to balance my studies with work and personal commitments. We know that prevention is key to better health outcomes, and it all starts with education. That’s how I want to make a difference in people's health. I highly recommend exploring alternative doctoral degrees if the PhD isn't the best fit for you! You will find something that offers a valuable path to achieving your academic and professional goals, tailored to your specific needs and career aspirations. Don't limit yourself to traditional paths—there are many options out there that can help you advance your career and expand your knowledge in meaningful ways.

❗️ EDUCATION Too often in an era that values interdisciplinary and comprehensive perspectives, education remains entrenched in silos. We must strive to balance the depth of knowledge within these silos with the breadth needed to connect with other disciplines. To truly understand the world and humanity it's imperative to combine various perspectives and possess both the attitude and skills necessary for this endeavor. All this has major implications also for us who, as academics, often flourish in our silos, but have an important research and educational ‘mission’ to contribute to strengthen the future… Swiss Paraplegic Research LIFE – Lucerne Initiative for Functioning, Health, and Well-being – University of Lucerne Fakultät für Gesundheitswissenschaften und Medizin – Universität Luzern
