🌳 News from the Billion Tree Afforestation Support Project 🌳 DFS and WWF Pakistan have been supporting the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Climate Change, Forestry, Environment & Wildlife Department (CCFEWD) in #Pakistan as part of the Billion Tree Afforestation Support Project (BTASP). 🔦 Through the Pakistan-German Climate and Energy Partnership (PGCEP) and a generous grant of 13.5 million EUR, this initiative aims to ensure the sustainable use of forest resources, especially those established through the BTAP and 10-BTTP initiatives since 2015 in the KP Province. 🌿 Our approach involves empowering 100 local communities to sustainably manage and enhance their forest resources. The Forest Department will deploy field teams to continuously interact with these communities, culminating in a participatory forest resource management plan (PFRMP). Mobility is key for these planning teams. 🚙 Therefore, we're happy to announce that, following the provision of 36 motorbikes in early 2023, now 15 sturdy field vehicles were financed through the project’s disposition fund. On June 7, 2024, these vehicles were formally handed over by Project Director Mr. Junaid Dayar and DFS Team Leader Mr. Jörn Köckritz to the forest divisions involved, as well as to the CDE&GAD Directorate. #BillionTreeAfforestation #Sustainability #ClimateAction #CommunityEngagement

Today, on #InternationalDayofForest, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of forests to our planet’s🌍 health and prosperity. From combating #climatechange to supporting #biodiversity and providing #livelihoods, forests are essential for sustainable development. Let’s commit to protecting and restoring our forests. We could do this by endorsing responsible forestry practices, minimizing the use of products that lead to #deforestation, and encouraging reforestation initiatives. We not only work on ensuring there is water security but also take initiatives in #reforestation. This is evident with the recently launched Western Area Peninsula Water Fund in Sierra Leone which aims to tackle the challenge of water, and also to restore the destroyed critical habitat for wildlife, such as the endangered western chimpanzee. 🇪🇨 #photosfromthefield #Ecuador The Andean Landscapes project aims to improve livelihoods, governance mechanisms, and capacity building with gender sensitive and culturally relevant approaches. It looks to adopt the best practices for integrated landscape-based territorial management to increase productivity sustainably while addressing climate change and environmental degradation in agriculture, forestry and fisheries. It uses an Integrated Landscape Management (#ILM) approach to strengthen sustainable livelihoods and conserve ecosystem services in the Andean Mountains in Ecuador, particularly in the western foothills of the provinces of Imbabura, Pichincha, Cotopaxi and Bolivar. 🌿 Urgent Update: Victoria's Ash Forests Face Ecosystem Collapse 🌿 A dire situation is unfolding as Victoria's Ash forests teeter on the brink of ecosystem collapse. A combination of poor flowering seasons and recurrent fire events has sounded the alarm, and it's imperative that we take action. Notably, Ecologist Owen Bassett, the state's leading forest flowering and seeding expert, warns that the capacity for natural regeneration in these forests is in jeopardy. Without intervention, the next fire season could be catastrophic. Here are the key concerns: 🔥 Over 143,000 hectares of fire-killed forest are regenerating but extremely vulnerable to further fire events. 🌱 These areas lack the ability to reseed naturally, leaving them at risk of permanent loss. 🌳 Seed collection services, currently provided by VicForests, may be in jeopardy due to the native timber sector shutdown. Forestry Australia president, Dr. Michelle Freeman, underscores the importance of active forest management to enhance resilience against catastrophic fires and to restore and maintain forest ecosystems. 🌲 Our Ash forests are invaluable, and we must act swiftly to protect them. Together, we can make a difference and safeguard these vital ecosystems. 🎊 🎉 Congrats to Zambia on submitting its NAP to UNFCCC UN! Developed through a participative and iterative process, the plan sets out medium- and long-term #ClimateChange #adaptation goals to increase the resilience of the most vulnerable communities and sectors—agriculture, fisheries, forestry, water, transport, tourism, infrastructure, mining, wildlife & health. Zambia’s NAP also aims to integrate adaptation into the national, sectoral and sub-national planning and budgeting processes, as well as to strengthen institutional and technical capacities to implement adaptation priorities. #AfricanFutures Human-wildlife conflict situations involving several animal species have harmed residents in Namibia's 🇳🇦 Kunene Region. Events such as these destroy everything, from crops and animals to buildings and lives. The Namibian Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism @MEFT received grants, infrastructure, and equipment worth N$31 million as part of the "Poverty-Oriented Support to Community Conservation in Namibia" (POSCCIN) Project, which was funded by the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) 🇩🇪 the KfW Development Bank 🇩🇪 . The funding will allow the project to address issues such as: -Predator-proof kraals are being built to protect livestock from predators. -Water infrastructure to prevent contact between people, animals, and wildlife, hence reducing competition for this crucial resource. -The continuation of the Lion Ranger Programme. -Predator collaring and the creation of numerous early warning systems. -Other actions proposed by the community. “Measuring progress is often like watching grass grow. While it’s difficult to detect movement on a daily basis, it’s simple to see growth over time.” – Frank Sonnenberg On the 13th day of the Government Roadshow, I joined CS Moses Kuria and CS @Soipan Tuya at the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry. The Ministry's work is about safeguarding the very resources and ecosystems that sustain our nation's economic stability, livelihoods, and future. And in the face ofclimate change, this conversation has become more critical than ever. #climatechange

As an Urban Forestry major, I see how important trees are in cities. They help clean the air by taking in pollutants and giving us oxygen. Trees also cool things down by providing shade and releasing moisture, which makes city temperatures more comfortable. Being around trees and green spaces can reduce stress and make us feel happier. Trees also provide homes for birds and other wildlife, helping nature thrive even in the city. They soak up rainwater, which helps prevent flooding. Plus, neighborhoods with more trees often look nicer and have higher property values. Overall, trees make cities healthier and more pleasant places to live.🌳🌆
