The UK funded AIM4Forests (Accelerating Innovative Monitoring for Forests), is a pioneering programme launched in 2023 with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). AIM4Forests is a five-year programme designed to accelerate country capabilities in forest monitoring as a part of global efforts to stop deforestation and forest degradation and restore forests. The project aims both to provide countries with the technological means to combat deforestation and actively involve Indigenous Peoples in forest monitoring. That’s especially crucial in a country like Papua New Guinea, where forest ownership rests overwhelmingly with Indigenous Peoples. With £24.5 millions of International Climate Finance to accelerate innovative monitoring of forests, the programme will help meet the pledges made by the world leaders at the UN's climate talks in Glasgow in 2021. This funding is part of the UK's commitment to doubling UK International Climate Finance (ICF) contribution to at least £11.6 billion between April 2021 and March 2026, including investing at least £3 billion ICF in development solutions that protect and restore nature. We are excited to announce that last night at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) announced funding to support Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) as the secretariat for the Ocean Acidification Research for Sustainability (OARS) programme. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eBfUnTip Building on the work of Goa-On (the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network), the OARS programme - which is part of the UN Ocean Decade - is designed to provide society with the evidence needed to not only identify and monitor ocean acidification, but also to mitigate and adapt to its impacts, in line with UN Sustainable Development Goal 14.3 and target 8 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.  The news was announced by the UK Secretary of State Therese Coffey as part of the High-Level Event for Nature and People. I am not an environmental professional nor do I have practical experience in this field, but I have a profound connection with nature, stemming from my upbringing in a densely forested area. I vividly recall how my grandfather and father would carefully mark trees and ensure that replacements were planted and thriving before the marked ones were sold. Their commitment to environmental sustainability was evident in their actions. Today, I am increasingly alarmed by the various calamities occurring globally. During my recent travels, I observed that weather patterns are becoming more unpredictable, causing significant damage to property and human lives. The rising temperatures are making survival challenging in many regions. For instance, the temperature in Addis Ababa today mirrors the heat I experienced decades ago while traveling to Djibouti and Assab. Despite some positive initiatives and efforts in various countries, it is concerning that many human activities continue to harm the environment. I firmly believe that the world is not ours to exploit but rather an inheritance from our ancestors and a legacy we owe to our children. We must therefore do more to protect the environment, recognizing that nature seems increasingly inclined to penalize humanity for its transgressions. If we fail to take greater responsibility for the environment and future generations, what legacy will we leave behind? I see this as a profound moral obligation. Just as our forefathers ensured the sustainability of their environment for us, we must commit to preserving and properly handing over nature to the next generation. This responsibility, I believe, is crucial for the well-being of our planet and our descendants. What is your thought on this?

From forests and drylands to farmlands and lakes, natural spaces on which humanity’s existence depends are reaching a tipping point. According to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40 per cent of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population. The number and duration of droughts has increased by 29 per cent since 2000 – without urgent action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world's population by 2050. Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. This is why World Environment Day 2024 focuses on land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”  We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land. 2024 will mark the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.
