Do you know which day is today?
I did not.
January 24 is World Day for African and Afrodescendant Culture.
It commemorates the diverse and lively cultures stemming from the African continent and its global diasporas.
As stated on UNESCO website, "This date coincides with the adoption of the Charter for African Cultural Renaissance in 2006 by the Heads of State and Government of the African Union. Celebration of this day also aims to promote the widest possible ratification and implementation of this Charter by African States, thereby strengthening the role of culture in promoting peace on the continent."
This celebration aligns with UNESCO's mission to advocate for the appreciation of cultural diversity and human creativity worldwide.
Recognizing African and Afrodescendant cultures as a valuable part of our global heritage is essential for sustainable development, fostering mutual respect, encouraging dialogue, and promoting peace.
