Calling all synchrotron radiation users: Do you need beamtime fast? We have got you covered with our new rolling access model at PETRA III. Advantage of the rolling proposal submission is a shorter time between proposal and beamtime allocation or - if needed - fast scheduling for a specific date. The first rolling access proposal run has successfully received beamtime at the P22 beamline at PETRA III in the last week of June - it took just 65 days from proposal submission until the first measurements at the PETRA III beamline! Perovskites are among the greatest hopes in the solar industry. These materials could replace silicon as the basic semiconducting component of solar cells, as they are just as readily available and much easier to process. Alternatively, the two could be used in a paired set as a so-called tandem cell: The perovskite solar cell at the top converts visible light into electricity, while the silicon cell at the bottom converts infrared light. This promises the highest efficiency. However, it is difficult to produce perovskites on an industrial scale. A new measuring method developed at DESY by the team around our colleague Michael Stuckelberger could help to remedy this shortcoming, and it goes by the name of Axolotl. The Transatlantic Big Science Conference took place on June 27 and 28th in Berlin. One of the takeaways is the need for norms and standards for safe data sharing norms when it comes to science and R&D projects. This showcases as well a precarious balance between open science - which is needed to advance big research topics from health research to fusion or the implementation of AI - and research security. Thank you as well to Mario Brandenburg for an inspiring key note focusing on the need to train the next generation of scientists in a collaborative way. On 2 July we had the pleasure of hosting a group of 15 master's students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at DESY in Hamburg! Professor Adam Lovelady and his students, who specialize in circular economy, transformation technology, and environmental sciences, were eager to learn about the impact of research activities on sustainability at DESY. Dr. Denise Völker and Dr. Andrea Klumpp from DESY's sustainability team gave a fascinating presentation on the sustainability impact of research activities on the DESY campus and the innovative approaches DESY is taking to reduce its environmental footprint. Highlights included a tour of the DESY campus, showcasing façade greening, roof greening, and heat recovery from cooling experiments and machines. The students were also introduced to the DESY Sustainability Report, which provides insights into the institute's sustainability efforts. Höhepunkte waren eine Führung über den DESY-Campus, bei der wir den Studenten die Fassaden- und Dachbegrünung, die Wärmerückgewinnung aus der Kühlung von Experimenten und Maschinen und vieles mehr zeigten. Die Studenten wurden auch mit dem DESY Sustainability Report bekannt gemacht, der Einblicke in die Nachhaltigkeitseinsätze von DESY gibt. Light is an excellent carrier of information used not only for classical communication technologies but increasingly also for quantum applications such as quantum computing. However, processing light signals is far more difficult compared to the more common electronic signals. In experiments at DESY´s X-ray source PETRA III and at the ESRF - The European Synchrotron, an international team of researchers has demonstrated how X-ray pulses can be stored and released in a novel way that could be applicable for future X-ray quantum technologies. #quantumtechnologies #sciencecoooperation More information: https://lnkd.in/eZudp9ne

The second edition of the Transatlantic Big Science Conference has kicked off in Berlin. This landmark event, organised by DESY and Carnegie Science, spans more than two continents and claims ambitious goals. The conference aims to enhance transatlantic cooperation in research and technology, fostering sustainable and reliable partnerships to address global challenges and set the groundwork for common research policies. A common thread uniting all talks and panels is the importance of not only transatlantic but global cooperation in science – which is not just a requirement, but the basis for scientific breakthroughs and innovation – and the importance of big data, AI, and quantum technologies. Panels address topics such as the role of basic science in the our interconnected and interdependent world, bio-preparedness, and the current status of science in Ukraine and its outlook. PETRA IV Parliamentary Breakfast today (27 June) in Berlin: Why does Germany need the X-ray microscope of superlatives, what will it achieve for science and innovation? Where does the project stand today and what is needed to realise this unique instrument for the broadest range of research questions in the natural sciences and technology? Many thanks to Holger Becker for his patronage and support and for the strong backing of the research committee.  Holger Hanselka, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in Germany, delivers words of support for PETRA IV in Berlin as well, stressing the importance of complimentary competencies of the different scientific institutions. Approval also from the Dean of Universitätsklinikum Hamburg Eppendorf, Blanche Schwappach-Pignataro, because PETRA IV will offer unique opportunities for biomedical research and open up new therapeutic options in the long term.
