RICHARD H. DRIEHAUS ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION 2018-2019 |Olite, Navarra was one of the four locations of the 2018-2019 edition. Olite’s proposal seeks to carry out an intervention to upgrade and embellish a strategic area of the urban fabric which connects the Palace and the Church of Santa María with the Church of San Pedro, which, however, is located outside the most frequented areas by tourism: the axis aligning the Rúa Villavieja, the Plaza del Fosal, the Plaza de la Rueda and its surrounding areas and the relationship between these spaces with the outside of the former walled perimeter. All of this will make it possible to give back to this area the importance and the attractiveness which it always had. FIRST PRIZE: “Cerquo” by Estefanía Fernández-Cid Fernández-Viña, Xavier Espinós Bermejo, Lucía Espinós Bermejo, and Rodrigo Toro Sánchez. Their project for the new building at Plaza del Fosal incorporates the typical construction characteristics of the area, without detracting from the prominence of the adjacent temple. The same virtues are found in the building proposed for the Rúa Villavieja. Sameness – a blessing or a curse? That was a recurring thought walking around the Cimitero Monumentale di Milano, which must be one of the greatest architectural zoos on the planet. Here, architecture is safe to express itself, unfettered by residential design codes or the demands of the living. The surprising thing is the architectural diversity of the monuments. The transience of architectural expression in this ‘city of the dead’ is embraced, just as it is in the ‘city of the living’ around it - a contrast to other Italian cities such as Venice and Rome, which feel like they’ve been embalmed. Milan’s architectural diversity works because the city has been well curated. There is clearly a design culture that includes a commitment to quality, an enthusiasm for the future, and a respect for what came before. Like the surrounding city, the architectural diversity of the cemetery is held together by a consistency of scale and streetscape. The lessons to be learnt? Sameness is a balancing act. There is a Goldilocks zone – not too much sameness and not too little. Clinging like a limpet to the rock of the past is not the way forwards, especially for the living, and design quality is an essential ingredient.

We are fully committed to two issues when designing our homes. The first is #energyefficiency. Our houses have very low energy consumption and we achieve that with contemporary technology, but also with passive strategies, which actually have long traditions. And we are also committed to houses for good living. The relationship between #inside and #outside is one of the fundamental issues to create spaces to enjoy fully. Both issues belong to the tradition of architecture both in the Middle East and in Spain. The #courtyard, so central to our projects, has been a feature of traditional domestic architecture in both geographies. A few years ago we wrote about this #onourblog.

RICHARD H. DRIEHAUS ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION 2020-2022 | Valpuesta, Berberana, Burgos was one of the three locations chosen for the 2020-2022 edition. The aim of this intervention is to recover a group of buildings located in the main public space of the town, between the Torre de los Velasco and the collegiate church of Santa María de Valpuesta. The latter is especially relevant, because some of the earliest evidences of the Spanish language were found there. For this reason, the restored ensemble will be transformed into a center for the study on the origins of Spanish. FIRST PRIZE: “La Casa Encendida” by Susana Granizo Polo and Silvia N. Gómez Díaz. From the proposal, the jury highlighted the treatment of the public spaces and the linkage between the project site and the neighbouring streets and plazas, along with the quality and distribution of interior spaces and the well-suited and integrated solution for increasing headroom in the top floor.
