“I read the news today, oh boy”: Saudi Arabia’s the winner for the 2030 World Expo in Riyadh. They beat South Korea (Busan) and Italy (Rome). I’m not surprised. When I saw how the Saudis had plastered Paris last summer with giant billboards, bus ads, and taxi wraps promoting their candidacy, all to appeal to a minuscule 180 voters at the Bureau of International Expositions, I knew they had what it took to win. More than anything this Expo 2030 represents how the arc of World Expos has bent from London and Paris and Chicago in the 19th century to Shanghai, Astana, Dubai, Osaka, and now Riyadh in the 21st. Expos aren’t just the planet’s biggest event; they’re the ultimate in soft power. World expos used to portray the Middle East in typecast “native villages” that made them seem exotic, sensuous, and dangerous. They ran the gamut from donkeys to belly dancers. Even Middle Eastern monarchs who attended were sucked into that black hole of stereotypes. Like when the Khedive of Egypt visited the 1867 World Expo in Paris, he ended up staying in the imitation medieval Egyptian palace and became a part of the exhibition, a prop in a play. Now under the theme, “The era of change: together for a foresighted tomorrow,” Expo 2030 is likely to have the largest footprint in history, and maybe the most impactful, with plans to plant 10 million trees in the Riyadh area, establish the first carbon-neutral World Expo, and produce a living model of sustainable urban development in a region that will be blowtorched by climate change. They will go from the formulaic to the phenomenal. #expo2030 #saudivision2030 #saudiarabia #riyadhexpo2030 #expo2023doha #expo2027 #bie

With just one year remaining until its grand opening, the preparations for the 2025 World Exposition in #Osaka are accelerating 🚀. Several nations have commenced construction on their own pavilions in recent months. Yet, there are lingering concerns regarding the lack of public enthusiasm 🤔. #Expo2025 has faced challenges related to escalating costs, particularly in venue development, which have surged to nearly double the initial estimate, reaching $1.5 billion 💸. The financial burden will be shared equally among three entities: the central government, the Osaka prefectural and city governments, and the business sector. #Japan #worldexpo #Osakaexpo https://lnkd.in/dbbaeYjC
