Without systems level understanding and long-term view, quick and fancy fixes are just that, just a bandaid. Human solutions are always much more than great soundbite. Anna is an amazing artist that had the courage to come to me & Joshua Evan Greenberg for help in her time of need. We looked around and there aren't a lot of places for artists to go for help during critical points of transition. Artists are classically more vulnerable humans, which is something that allows them to create their amazing work. But what happens when Artists don't have the community that's needed to support and guide them at points of personal crisis? If you don't have family, true friends or trusted advisors where do you turn for help? Everyone knows the term "Struggling Artist", which is a very real scenario and something that any artist who makes a commitment to their craft will go through in their lifetime. The majority of artists can't survive the struggling period and give up on their craft / dreams of making a living as an artist. Many of them don't have the real and unique talent that's required, but those that do, deserve a chance to share their gifts with the world. Anna, aka Queen of Tape https://lnkd.in/gmamKgGU, is one of those rare talents. She creates the most beautiful art with nothing but vision and tape. She has pioneered her craft and hustled her way into opportunities to create art for some of the most famous people and brands in the world. Two years ago she was on the rise and executed the most ambitious project of her career. She created an immersive exhibit at 360 CHICAGO in the #johnhancockbuilding, shortly after she experienced personal crisis that left her unable to physically and emotionally create her work. We set-up an Artist-in-Residence program at Jamie Makeup to help, with Anna being our first Artist. Through the program we're helping select Artists at critical times of transition, supporting them in rebuilding the foundation any human needs to be successful. In addition to investing the money and time needed to provide them with safe accommodations, basic living expenses and health/wellness activities, we're guiding them in re-structuring their ability to monetize their craft. Within the program, we're leading the fundraising initiative to raise the money needed to fully support their transition. If we had the means to fully finance this work ourselves, we would. But we're a small business, and their needs are greater then our means. Over the summer I was commissioned by Catalyst Network to write a piece about 'user centred design hacks'. I was interested in finding out how organisations who couldn't afford to hire or train people in user centred design did this work. I wanted to find those clever little work arounds that people had come up with that could benefit others. I had a hunch there were examples scattered around the public and charity sectors. All I had to do was go out there, collect these examples and bring them together into a valuable resource. Turns out I was kind of wrong! But that's the joy of an experiment eh. When to work for free… As a creative, determining when to work for free and when not to, can be a challenging decision. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, here are some factors to consider when determining whether to work for free or not: 🎯 Experience and Exposure: Working for free can be beneficial when you are just starting your career or looking to gain more experience. It offers an opportunity to build your portfolio and showcase your skills to potential clients or employers. 🎯 Collaborations and Networking: Collaborating with other creative professionals, such as writers, or web developers, can enhance your skills and lead to mutual benefits. These can help you expand your network and lead to potential paid projects in the future. 🎯 Non-profit or Charity Work: Working on projects for non-profit organizations or charitable causes can be rewarding, both personally and professionally. 🎯 Personal Projects: If you have a personal project or a passion project that excites you, working for free might be acceptable. However, be mindful of the time and effort you invest, as it should align with your long-term goals and not undermine your ability to earn a living. 📌 On the other hand, there are certain situations where working for free may not be advisable...
