For the past two weeks, I've been asked why I'm organizing an event in Ajegunle instead of simply giving out money or paying school fees for the residents if I truly want to help. My response is this: while I understand the sentiment, I believe that empowering the community goes beyond just financial aid. Many young people in Ajegunle (around 93%) dream of leaving the community and making a better life for themselves elsewhere. They believe that once they leave, all their problems will be solved. But I want to change that narrative. I want to show them that they have the power to make an impact right where they are. That's why I've been sponsoring the education of 10 kids in Ajegunle since 2021, and I hope to expand this initiative to the entire community. Beyond the TEDxAjegunle event, we want to partner with organizations that can offer internships, training opportunities, and mentorship to the participants. We've already secured one partner and are looking for more. We also want to collaborate with media companies to change the narrative about Ajegunle, which has been portrayed negatively for far too long. Finally, we're seeking partnerships with brands to make the event a colorful and memorable experience. Whatever you have in store let’s discuss about it. According to a study completed by the National Autistic Society, over a third of employers thought that an autistic person would be unlikely to fit into their team. But why? As the report goes on to highlight: 'These are damaging stereotypes, which can impact the ability of autistic people to find employment. It can make them less likely to disclose their diagnosis to either a prospective or current employer, and so not get access to crucial reasonable adjustments.' But we're working to change that. We work with employers everyday to show that being inclusive, diverse, and accessible doesn't have to be difficult. With summer on the horizon, most schools are about to end for the year. However, that shouldn’t mean that students should stop experiencing new things and enrich their experience. Especially if you plan to apply for a 4 year university, to boost your chances of acceptance you should try taking part in extracurricular opportunities during your summer break. Today, we’d like to share a few examples of these activities you could take part in during summer break. -Volunteering at an Old Age Home: From personal experience, this is a very enjoyable way to spend any free time you have. If you can find memory care centers or old age homes in your area, the residents of these places tend to really enjoy spending time with younger people that they don’t see very often. You can also engage in many activities including little games and arts and crafts which can be fun for you too! -Internships: It’s not easy to find a lot of internships, especially on short notice, however, with a little research there are so many open opportunities you are bound to find some in your area. We recommend using LinkedIn or even just google to search up any potential opportunities while you have time during the summer. -Online courses: Taking online courses or workshops can help students expand their knowledge and skills in various areas. Online courses are self-paced and are more affordable than classroom based courses. They help show students initiative and commitment towards lifelong learning. -Instilt Educate: Of course we had to save the best for last, Instilt is an amazing way to spend your time over the summer. You can volunteer remotely and build the times you have to do work around your schedule.
