Business Record staff members earned the award “Best Feature, Series – Gold” at the recent Alliance of Area Business Publishers Editorial Excellence awards. Team members Emily Kestel, Michael Crumb, Sarah Diehn and Emily Wood contributed to the series titled, “Belonging: How Iowa’s culture plays a role in workplace inclusion.” The judges said, “This successful series is both well-done and much-needed. The introductory story explores the intersection of ‘Iowa nice’ and workplace inclusion, and it sets the stage for an engaging and topical trio of pieces. The stories take off the rose-colored glasses in critically looking back on Iowa’s civil rights history, and also laser focus on what businesses are doing now and what the future can look like.” Read the series: https://lnkd.in/gNCk9_Cn

Karith Foster, comedian and founder of INVERSITY Solutions, believes there is a better way to embrace diversity than polarizing DEI policies. In this Roundtable video, she shares how employers can embrace diversity in a holistic manner. “When I saw that people were coming away from conversations around diversity and inclusion that are supposed to be bringing us together, that are supposed to be uniting us, but rather it was having the opposite effect. … In fact, it’s actually causing more division and polarization,” says Foster. “True diversity is about everyone.” Learn more about Karith Foster and True Diversity here: https://bit.ly/3vlk34u

“Meetings are a common place where white voices are centered. Non-white employees sometimes report feelings of invisibility or being ignored for their contributions. Asian employees, and more specifically East Asian employees, often recount experiences of feeling invisible in the workplace. There are also a number of studies where Black women employees report feelings of invisibility. When non-white employees do contribute thoughts during meetings, their contributions are more likely to be overlooked and ignored.” — Decentering Whiteness in the Workplace: A Guide for Equity and Inclusion by Janice Gassam Asare
