89% of event professionals surveyed by the Global Business Travel Association and Cvent stated that sustainability is a priority. But only 14% said the industry's made good progress
So, how do you bridge that gap?
Honestly, it's all about being realistic. We all want to do our part, to run on clean energy and for our respective industries not to have a negative impact on the environment. But sometimes that isn't possible.
What is possible is seeing what impact you and your organisation CAN make. So here are our tips for determining what that looks like for YOU:
→ Measure and improve: Set measurable sustainability goals and regularly assess your progress. This could involve tracking carbon footprint reductions, waste management improvements, or adopting green certifications.
→ Start small: Begin by identifying areas where small changes can make a big difference. For instance, reducing single-use plastics at events, using digital communications instead of printed materials, or opting for eco-friendly transportation options.
→ Collaborate and educate: Engage with vendors, partners, and attendees to collectively promote sustainability and find initiatives and social enterprises to help create a circular process.
→ Sustainable sourcing: Opt for local, organic, and seasonal ingredients for your event menus—and where possible avoid buffets and utilise food donations. Supporting local not only reduces the carbon footprint from transportation but also promotes community engagement.
→ Innovate and adapt: Embrace innovative solutions and technologies that align with your sustainability goals. Explore renewable energy sources, sustainable event design, or creative ways to repurpose materials.
→ Advocate for change: Use your platform to advocate for wider industry changes. Join industry associations, share success stories, and support policies that promote sustainability in events.
And from there, it's all about aligning with your team and mapping out what these changes look like in action! And if you need a little help doing that... Well, then you have our contact details 😉
