The EU is committed to fight climate change and biodiversity loss, and deforestation and forest degradation are a big part of the problem. With the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), the EU aims to ensure certain products and commodities imported, traded within or exported from the EU have not led to deforestation or forest degradation, and have been produced in compliance with the legislation of the country of origin. As of 30 December 2024, impacted businesses are required to provide due diligence statements verifying the #deforestation-free and legality status of commodities and products in scope. Products in scope are, as an example, cattle, beef and leather, cocoa beans, cocoa shells, cocoa mass, cocoa butter and chocolate; coffee, beans, husks; palm oil, nuts and seeds; rubber and rubber products; soybeans, bean flour and bean oil; wood, furniture, cellulose and paper. 🌳 The EU Deforestation Regulation: What does your company need to do? From December 2024, companies doing business in the EU will need to comply with the requirements of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This landmark regulation marks a significant step in global efforts to combat deforestation and promote sustainable land use practices. 🌳 What is the EU Deforestation Regulation? The EUDR aims to ensure that certain commodities, such as palm oil, soy, coffee, cocoa, beef, and timber, and products derived from these commodities, placed on the EU market are "deforestation-free." This means they must not have been produced on land that was subject to deforestation or forest degradation after a specific cut-off date. 🌳 What Does This Mean for Businesses? ⏺ Compliance Requirements: Businesses must implement due diligence processes to ensure their supply chains are free from deforestation. This includes detailed traceability, risk assessments, and reporting. ⏺ Supply Chain Transparency: Companies will need to provide comprehensive information about the origins of their commodities, enhancing transparency and accountability. ⏺ Sustainable Practices: Producers in exporting countries will be encouraged to adopt more sustainable land-use practices, leading to a positive environmental impact. ⏺ Market Access: Compliant businesses and producers can gain a competitive edge, benefiting from access to the EU market and aligning with consumer demand for sustainable products. #EUDR #deforestation #nature #naturepositive #climate #climatechange #forestdegredation #EU #sustainability

In recent years we have seen a sharp increase in regulation relating to ESG, and in particular, rules focusing on supply chain transparency. EUDR is a further example of this. Lots of work to do! Please reach out if you would like to discuss this. #esg #supplychain #fticonsulting
The EU is stepping up the fight against deforestation with the new Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which came into force in June 2023 and will be fully implemented by December 2024. Covering seven key commodities—cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, soy, and wood—as well as derived products like meat, chocolate, and paper, the EUDR requires companies selling products on the EU market to map and report on their environmental footprint. In this piece, our experts Nicola Cobb and Miriam Wrobel explain what companies should be aware of as the EUDR comes into effect, and we can support in preparing for its implementation: https://bit.ly/3T6dYBL #Sustainability #Deforestation #EUDR
