Fourthmeal... the meal between dinner and breakfast. It's been almost 20 years since we introduced this crazy idea that didn't just elevate the business, but truly became part of the cultural lexicon. The team at FCB Irvine and Taco Bell realized that 'spice up the night' had done great things for the business, but wanted to provoke the fast food industry as only TB could. Strategically, we leaned into the fact that the food did more than just fill you up, but late at night it was more about 'feeding your carnivorous side' (aka the main idea from the brief). Since then, seeing how the business has continued to evolve, creative that pushed deeper into the role Fourthmeal can play in people's nights, and as the CBO said at the time... "TB is really just late night food we eat during the day". Remembering our crew that created this iconic idea... Thanks to Phil Morton and Peter Ballard for spotting our old brand experience gap idea from 10 years ago - illustrated through our BURGER PROMISE vs BURGER EXPERIENCE analogy - playing out in real life. Our thinking at the time (circa 2011) was that as power shifts to consumers through digital to share and compare their experiences, that companies couldn't just promise, advertise and market their way to success but they would actually need to deliver or damage their trust and goodwill. That expectations would be shaped as much if not more by their experiences than the marketing. 🍔 McDonald's or Wendy's? Kha jaye yrr🤔 These were two famous burger outlets close to our college. When our group wants to go out for some celebration, the thought that came to our mind was McD or Wendy's. But why am I talking about this here? It's all about marketing strategy. If there was only one McD or Wendy's outlet nearby, we'd be stuck deciding whether to go or not. 🤔 But when we were offered two choices the question changed. We thought of choosing either of the two options. We end up buying or ordering from one of these outlets. The result is that the sale of both the stores increases. This same psychology is at play in those bustling food courts with an array of options. Marketers change the question in our minds, and voila, we're hooked. Speaking of McD or Wendy's, I was Wendy's all the way because they offered that irresistible free frosty. 😋 So, next time you hit a mall or food court, take a moment to ponder if marketers are playing with your psychology. 😉 P.S. Food = Average. Company = Fantastic Yesterday 3/4 of the Phonic Media squad tested the a brand new burger, chicken and hot dog restaurant that has opened up next to the office. I’ll be honest, the food was bang average and the service was a little poor (but we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt as they find their feet after opening) but the best part about it was the chance to connect and chat. It might sound a bit grandiose to talk about culture when you’re a team of 4 but I actually think it’s really important. The reason we’re getting half a dozen in-bound enquiries a week these days is due to the great work that the team does so actually making sure they know how valued they are is really important. We have a meal together weekly - and a lunchtime board game if there’s time - as it gives us a chance to connect without screens and computers and properly build a relationship. I think the ‘culture lunches’ are also important as we are about to grow again as an agency and we’ll likely double the team size by the end of the year, so our weekly meals make sure that the squad are all aware of what’s happen and they are ‘on the bus 🚎’ for the journey. No longer could companies promise, advertise and market their way to success. They would actually need to deliver or risk damaging their trust and goodwill. Expectations would be shaped as much, if not more, by their experiences rather than the marketing of them.
